Title: '68 Shelby GT350-Ford VIN #'s and Shelby build #'s match-Shelby ID doesn't
Post by: evinwilton on June 21, 2025, 09:13:25 PM
Anyone aware of why my Ford tags and the Shelby build tag all match but the Shelby vehicle ID tag does not match.  The engine ID# on the Ford and Shelby build match and are "J".  The engine ID# on the Shelby vehicle ID# for engine is an "S".  Someone said a bulletin went out in 1968 that said either Ford or Shelby used the wrong ID# (S) for the 428 in the '68 KR S is the 390 in the GT's.

I am hoping to get to the bottom of it and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on how I can find out whether my car was part of the cars that had the wrong Shelby vehicle ID put on?

Email Vinny the 68 Shelby registrar with your car number:

Never happened and no such bulletin exists.

I would start by sharing some photos to determine whats going on

I think your confusing several issues here. The engine code for a GT500 was "S" but it was not a mistake. The code was used for both the Shelby GT500 and the Mustang 390 cars. There are NO 390 engines in Shelbys.

It has nothing to do with a "mistake" or the GT350 numbers. It also has nothing to do with KRs.

I am going to bet a dollar if your GT350 has an "S" engine code you have some reproduction tags on the car

I have been studying tags for a long time
