Title: Unrestored Judging
Post by: Britton on June 21, 2025, 02:45:13 PM
I have a 1967 GT350 which is unrestored that I am considering bringing to SAAC50 and having judged in the unrestored category.

I am currently replacing the suspension rubber wear items as a safety measure, as the originals are worn/cracked. If I were to have the car judged, would the judges expect the suspension components to be left as-is with normal wear/dirt or would there be a deduction for dry ice blasting the parts to remove dirt/grime but leave the original finish?

Also, could someone provide insight into how this category is scored? Is it a deduction based point system similar to concours?

I will let some of the judges expound, but original parts are always better, even if worn.

Yes the points are similar to concours

First thanks for considering bringing your car to SAAC 50. Unrestored are often seen as the most popular class of cars we get to attend and it will surely get plenty of attention from a vast amount of participants and fellow owners.

Yes the sheets and points are based on starting with an 100% car and points are deducted from that point as the experienced judges go through the list/sheets and their observations.

Since we typically assign these cars to the Concours Judges or use a separate group of judges experienced in unrestored cars they can and will identify the reproduction parts and provide some consideration of wear to the parts they see and that the amount of consideration and deduction is different from what is allowed in Division I since that is a restored class not an unrestored class

Looking forward to seeing your car there and if you have any detailed questions feel free to contact the Concours Committee and we'll provide some help and guidance or at least something to base you choices on.

This is a continuing problem with the early cars. I may bring it to be judged then back home into the garage. Should I replace suspension parts so the car is safe to drive or leave it as is since I don't drive it anyway?
C'mon guys there will be only 1 50th SAAC convention. Bring your car and drive the hell out of it as intended. Or invest your money elsewhere and sell to somebody that will. You'll also free up a parking spot in your garage for the Prius......

Thanks, Pete and Jeff. I've reached out to Tim with some additional questions I have.

If you're going to trailer it, I say leave it as it is. And then make decisions after that based on what you are going to do with the car.
