Ed Pink, who built the 427 SOHC engine for the Don Prudhomme driven "Shelby Super Snake" top fuel dragster, has died. This car was the first to achieve a 6 second elapsed time in NHRA national competition and won top fuel eliminator at the 1967 NHRA Springnationals. It was also featured on the attached poster distributed by Shelby at the time.

Ed "fixed" the SOHC. He figured out the chain stretch problem and retimed the cams so they worked right. I think they were over 4 degrees out of sync. There was a video a year or two ago about him selling his shop and downsizing.

I fixed that for you, Ed copied Dave's fix. 2° advanced on one side 2° retarded on the other. "Z" died in '87, someone has to still have his back.

Where it started. Ed's 36 Ford coupe lakes racer. When Les Ritchey was killed in 66 Gas Ronda switched to Ed Pink for engines.

Without computers. Good old trial and error and flying by the seat of their pants. They were developing and writing the "How To" books that we refer to today.
Imagine thinking that some part would work. Produce the part and stick it in your engine. Yeah that feels good in the alley behind the shop so lets make the 200 mile round trip to the dry lake and see if it works. Aw gee no improvement in top speed - back to the drawing board. The first SoCal dragstrip was Santa Ana that opened in 1954 - nearly 30 years after they started lakes racing.

Harvey Crane Made His Dynamometer Available So Pete Robinson Could Validate The Theory That Cam Chain Stretch Was Retarding Timing And Exploding His Superchargers. For Proof, He Rigged Degree Wheels, A Strobe Light, And An 8mm Movie Camera To Record The Phenomenon.

There is truly no disrespect from my end in respect to "Sneaky" Pete Robinson. I had been told by Ed Donovan and Ed Iskendarian that "Z" had figured it out. So looking at my sources that was what I posted. I can not dispute you on that point.
