Title: Help/Advicde needed on 67 Power-Steering pump.
Post by: 7777kx on April 10, 2025, 11:44:16 AM
Hello, i have an early 67GT350 in my shop, here in the UK and my old friend Dan Nolan, based at the Mustang Barn in Harleysville PA also has a 67GT350 in his shop.
Both of us are having huge problems with brand new, or reconditioned Power-Steering pumps either not working on installation onto the car, or completely failing soon after fitment.
We are both following known bleeding, set-up methods but we are experiencing the same failures.
He is on his third pump and i am on my second.
Would any SAAC Member know of a good US based established rebuilder who can turn out a good pump? or maybe does anybody have a NOS Unit they would sell?
Any help/advice or pointer would be much appreciated to both of us.
Many thanks Alan and on behalf of Dan.

A common failure for rebuilt 60's Ford PS pump is when you use a alternative to the tried and true type F PS fluid that is the dark red in color. Always use type F is my advise and possible reason for failure of multiple rebuilt units in a row. Most rebuilders will note type F in instructions.

Both Alan and I are very familiar with the correct fluid to use.
The current power steering pump that failed was a Cardone 967052. Said to be a brand new pump, not a rebuild. The other two were "rebuilt". I did restore, detail and install the original pump can. This pump lasted 4 miles of driving until I heard and felt things going wrong. The pump got so hot it was smoking along with the hoses and control valve. How the hoses did not burst, I don't know. I cut the belt and drove back to the shop. After cooling down, you can now spin the pump with no resistance. Wish I could post the video

I have a couple NOS and ford rebuilt pumps that I would sell but I only ship to a US address. I have a high confidence level in Dan at Chockostang abilities.

Hello Bob, thank you for taking the time to respond to the problems Dan and i are having.
I am interested in one of your known pumps, perhaps one of the NOS units? What cost please?
Shipping would be to Dans shop in Harleysville.
Many thanks
Alan

Rodes Restoration only does power steering pumps. They have done a dozen for me over the years...

Yup. He did one pump (out of many he has done for me) that did not build pressure. He sent a call tag for it, repaired it the same day. I think the return to him and the return to me took less than a week - maybe 6 days total. The second time it worked perfectly of course.
