Title: ‘66 Ray Brown Seat Belts
Post by: GT350Nick on April 02, 2025, 07:06:20 PM
I am looking for an original set of Ray Brown belts. My car is a February 1966 car so earlier the better. Thank you. Nick

Can you confirm the seatbelts appropriate for a Feb 66 car would be Ray Brown or Impact, chrome or cad plated hardware, long or short hook? Paul.

Hi Paul,

That is a very good question. I believe I need chrome hardware with long hooks. Ray Brown or Impact would work.

When I bought 843 (Delivered to Hertz LA in Feb 66) it had 1 belt with chrome hardware and one with cad plated hardware. I didn't take note of the length of the hooks. I think they both had short hooks. Richard may know.
Ray Brown sold the company sometime in 1966. I think the change from Brown to Impact belts is car 1800-2000. Is there a car number listed in the judging standards for the cutoff.

My car is 937 so Ray Brown, chrome, long hooks.

No. Have to consider that the cars were not all built in sequential order so the best one could likely do is to provide a range during which the can might have taken place, not an exact specific car number when the change occurred

Definitely Chrome and long hooks for the 2/26 car. Either Ray Brown or Impact would be appropriate.  They can even be a mix set between the two seats.  I think short hooks are generally considered Early.

+1. From my observations there are no absolutes when it comes to 66 seat belts, only trends. The best you can do IMO is look for cars near yours with original belts and go from there.

It was also stated on this forum a while back that when hertz cars were sent back to be cleaned, the seat belts were removed, and there were a pile of seat belts to pick from that had already been cleaned and ready to be installed.

I am not sure that statement is accurate. It is at least not accurate for all 66 Hertz GT350's being readied for resale.

As someone stated not all cars had the same matching pair. I have a pair of seat belts that were removed from a 66 in 1966 and placed in a box on a shelf since. One was Ray Brown and the other Impact.

I think I can explain 2 different belts in the same car. SA did not control their parts on a first in first out basis, Stuff was put on the shelf in front of existing stock and pulled when needed,
There was probably 1 guy on each side of the car installing the brake duct and belts on his side. When he was low on seat belts the stock guy would grab a box and put on his side of the car. When the guy on the other side needed belts the guy brought another box with no regard as to finish - the part numbers were the same.

.   That is true, I have a set out of a 66 Hertz car that were taken out after the vehicle was returned to the dealer.
