Title: Non-adhesive wire tape source
Post by: CharlesTurner on February 11, 2025, 12:33:50 AM
Anyone know a source for non-adhesive wire tape, 3/4" black?

Specifically looking for 7 mil thickness.  Lots of the thin 2-3 mil out there, but the original tape was thicker.  It makes a difference in the appearance.

I found adhesive tape in the same spec, but would be a bit tedious to remove the adhesive.

This is the type of tape used on engine bay harnesses.

Hi Charles,
Just saw 7 mil thick on Dead nuts on site but it is 1" wide. May work or Jack would know where to get thinner width....Hope this helps.

Jack replied that he only has the 1" and also had difficulty finding 3/4".  He suggested cutting down the 1"... so that's an option.

Maybe this, or something like it, could help...

Hi Charles,
How much of the 3/4" tape do you need? Is it a current need for a project or just trying to get some in stock?

Hey Tom.  Need enough to do a '65 headlight harness and would be nice to have extra for future needs.

Well, after many attempts at finding a 7 mil non-adhesive 3/4" tape, I threw in the towel and wiped adhesive off an entire roll of electrical tape.  The results are perfect.

FYI, the 1" 7 mil that Jack sells is very shiny black.  It may be correct for later year cars, but at least for 65-66 it was originally satin finish tape.

I'm guessing Solvent, if so what type?

Yep, just mineral spirits/parts cleaner, nothing nasty like lacquer thinner.  Came off relatively easy, just doing like 60 feet was a little time consuming!

Yup, get a dish or bowl put mineral spirits in, then drop a roll of tape in  for a day.

Walla, adhesive be gone

Lacquer thinner will dissolve the tape completely
