I saw this car the day it was being delivered to Grossman by Bill Kolb. Kolb was driving it up Broadway in NYC in my old neighborhood.

His tie was flapping in the breeze as he roared by. The sound of the exhausts was echoing off of the buildings.

He was headed for the West Side Highway on his way to Grossman's in Rockland County. This was the fall of 1967.

I don't remember the exact date but sometime in late October or early November.

It was the first 427 Cobra that I saw "on the street".

It put on quite a show just driving by and was early in the morning about 8:30 so the reaction of the locals was just to grimace at it and a mix of attempted ignoring it v WTF?

W 71st at that time of day is just a mix of night people crawling or staggering home and the day people trying to grab a coffee on the way to work.

The streetwalkers were already home by 8am. I knew many of them by face back then since we all grabbed coffee to go at a local shop on Amsterdam.

A few years later, John Lennon moved into the neighborhood in the "Dakota". The Dakota is on the north side of w 72 nd Street corner with Central Park West that runs north. At the time was definitely a neighbor in transition and now is pretty exclusive/expensive.

"Strawberry Fields", is right across the street in Central Park.

Not really anyone would expect to see a 427 SC traveling through? Me included.

Sorry. This is not"patina". This car wants to be restored to its former glory.

What say you all?

This not patina, this is neglect. Don't know the owners situation it's his to do as he sees but probably can't afford the cost of a restoration. Have seen a few of the shelby cars pulled out of the garage or shed that look horrible, and people comment there only original once. Well they were old cars and parked for what ever reason and now since there is value to them they drag them out and wanna get top dollar for a ratty car. Barn find, patina what ever the latest craze is. My opinion something like this cobra needs at least a nice paint job. Probably gonna piss someone off here.

How many other original Cobra owners do you think poured over this car at length? A rare wealth of information in its current state. I can appreciate a perfect restoration but I think I would just maintain it as is. Besides, Im not a fan of this color and I would be tempted to a change with a restoration.

Then it wouldn't be "restored". It would be rebuilt/modified to your taste. This was 1 of 2 cars painted Hertz Gold at the factory. I'd wager that is the lowest number of all the colors.

A subtle mod. More like a restoration with an asterisk. And with no other deviations. But then If I had the money I would chase down a GT40 instead,( Not gold).

Only original once,  the historical significance out weights the restoration

One of two painted this gold

Keep as is it sell

It is a bit of a can of worms to consider what if anything to do with the car as it is now?

To those who never saw these cars new in as delivered condition, they were never as detailed as what many "so called accurate" restorations represent them to be now.

Probably it is more accurate to state that each car had it's own cosmetic imperfections new and few had none.

Basically they were just clean. The seats were not wrinkled yet. The S/C's had vinyl upholstery. Leather was for the street cars.

Unfortunately or fortunately, what current "caretakers" do IS strongly influenced by market or potential market values. A $3 million offer as is really is very influential. It is almost a sentence to live with.

For me, my thinking is that I can't make that judgement unless I owned the car and frankly although I love real Cobras, I don't think I would want to own one. It's kind of like being the "significant other" of a celebrity.
I would just as well, not want to be. Just say hello once in a while.

That should be a private thing and not influenced or even regulated by other public opinion. Owning a real Cobra these days, dealing with it as what it was intended to be, a real car is past. It is an historical icon and that is well beyond normal life occurrences.

The car is bigger then the person who owns it. That is difficult to conceive of rationally at least to me.

Is the gold a factory colour ?

Really seems to suit it well

One of the Ford GT's that finished 1-2-3 at Lemans was gold. The #5 car. It seems to suit it well but really is a matter of taste.

My favorite gold car is the the #1 Detomaso Mangusta that was the show car with the glass roof panels and the Corvette coupes in gold look to me to be an outstanding choice.

Also everyone is presuming that the Cobra is wearing the original factory applied paint and was never repainted or touched up in it's racing career?

If the gold was all faded to one even shade i would 100 percent say leave as is. To me, its just a little too far gone to keep it like that.

Yes The Bucknam car with the ugly pink accents by the headlights. It wasn't the fastest color finishing 3rd behind the winning Mile's Blue car and the black one the FIA claimed was the winner.....

I note that a number of people agree that it would be a crime to restore this car, because it's so original. But is it? No. It wore its original paint in the photo above with Carter Gette circa '72 in the car with the Country Squire wagon looking to the right. A few years later the car was sold to two more owners, and it was given a restoration that included a repaint in Guardsman Blue. It stayed blue for at least 30 years thereafter until it was "depainted" using ice and a razor blade.
That is why the gold paint has so many spots of blue, and of course the finish looks pretty tired because it was heavily sanded before the repaint in blue. Which one might say is a type of created patina. Is this an unrestored Cobra? Nope. More accurately, it is an "un-restored" Cobra.

It's a long time ago Ned. I didn't recognize Carter? I thought it was Elvis with the sideburns? Didn't that car get wrecked or at least crashed on the left front by Grossman? The "coupe" is hiding in the barn?

I knew someone that could counterfeit patina on art works. He got out of jail a long time ago and changed his name.

Doug, if Grossman smacked this one, I'm not aware of it. And sadly, Carter has been gone long enough now that when he appears in a photo it's a "Oh yeah, I recall that guy" kind of experience.

It's a long time since I browsed the Cobra Registry. I thought I remembered Grossman bending up a comp car? This one I know he had even if was only briefly.

I remember Carter. I remember riding with Ken Eber in his 289 with Carter behind in his Cammer. He decided to wind the thing up and it kind of sounded like a jet plane taking off from behind us. I think that's where my cap got blow off? Probably got sucked into the intake of it? At 8,000 rpm's the carbs get hungry really fast. 8)
