Title: need help with restoring a 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible
Post by: Pico88 on September 15, 2024, 03:03:22 AM
Hi, I'm a guy in italy who has been lucky to purchase a 1969 shelby gt 500 convertible that needs a full restoration. I need some tips on bodywork because there's really limited informations available here for that model and we don't want to make a mistakes. Could someone hel me out?
First, I need to understand how the entire floor pan is constructed because we are considering whether to modify the 1969 model or to use the floor pan from the 1967 convertible.
thank you
Pietro

The 1967 and 1969 floor pans are very different.

You have an expensive car and using original parts is the best idea.

The floor pan is one piece. It goes from rocker panel to rocker panel. There is a seam at the firewall and one under the rear seat

Please share some information like the VIN and some photos

There are whole lot of things to think about when replacing the floors in your convertible.  One of the first considerations is to be sure to weld in bracing to keep that body together when the floor comes out.  Whats the condition of the torques boxes and the inner rocker panels?  Its been my experience when removing a floor that lots of other things can show up that need attention; so do a thorough inspection of all of those potential problem areas and make a plan for removal/installation and get your replacement panels ordered and ready to go.

Get ready to document all of the interior parts and wiring you will need to remove or replace before you can get to the floor removal.  Not a lot of details in your post about your experience level.  Do a good online search for information about what you are going to do.  Some pretty good older publications out there on Mustang floor panel replacement.  Better yet, if you can find a professional or very experienced body guy that has done this stuff before you will be very glad you did.

Remember that our cars are mustangs

Always look for mostly mustang parts

Here is another vendor for 1969 mustang parts

Please get some advice from someone that has restored a car  before. Many of the floor pans listed above are not correct for a 1969 car. They will fit, but they are not correct.

Buongiorno  8)
Thank you,
I'm not sure that a 69 mustang fastback complete floor pan is correct for convertible

Those are patterned after earlier floor pans and the rib design is different

Exactly. The design of the original ribbing resembles the floor of the '67 convertible much more than that of the '69 fastback. That's why I'm confused. Someone have some pics about a 69 convertible without interiors ?

ciao amico

To confuse thing even more there are two 67 floor versions

Here are some pictures of a 69 convertible from the top side.  Just like non-convertible floors if your not looking at all the different parts added/welded to them. Of course its more difficult to see the details from the interior side  :)

Haven't had to use reproduction floors but at one point guys were having to modify the reproductions by adding a different front outer panel with the different webbing.

To the OP,

The quoted links above shows what not to use for your 1969 Shelby, please be careful in your choices. Listen to folks like Coralsnake and J Speegle, as they both have actual, hands on experience documenting and restoring these cars

Feel free to look through this album on my original floors in my 70 GT350 vert. It appears a poster here keeps trying to direct you to non original and incorrect repo foreign metal. As many others here have said take the time to use original Ford 69 floors or know how to modify the dynacorns(lots of work) to make them look correct. I highly recommend taking coralsnake up on his offer. https://www.flickr.com/photos/shelbymann1970/albums/72177720313614915/with/49339189097

Unfortunately, we had to do this off site, because there are people here with their own agendas. It's okay you will get good information.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I kindly ask if you have photos of the '69 Mustang convertible, showing the entire body and its details. I want to restore it correctly to 100%. Obviously, it will never be like a perfectly preserved model, but I want to get as close as possible. In fact, all the parts I was missing have been purchased as originals. Little by little, we will bring it back to life because it deserves it
