Title: Shifter plate
Post by: deathsled on February 07, 2024, 01:47:53 PM
My car is originally an automatic however now lives with a four speed and Hurst shifter. Curious what the 66 manual Shelby Mustangs have for a cover plate. I have seen a few pictures with what appears to be a floating chrome bezel. Below is the current configuration. Does it need a bezel is my question.

Put the floating chrome bezel on and your done. The folds of the shifter boot hold it in place.

the chrome bezel gives it that finishing touch, makes it look more complete

Does the boot go on top of the carpet or under?

The boot is under the carpet.  I do not think the bezel will cover the screws.

+1 Boot - carpet - plate

Looks like I will need a different boot. Thanks for the info.

Looks like you have a Hurst shifter.  The stock Mustang shifter boot may conform to the Hurst shape so you can use the stock shifter bezel, but not sure.  If you do convert to a stock boot and bezel, you will probably end up with the existing boot holes visible.  That is unless you change the carpet.

I never cut the carpet. I put the screws through the carpeting so there may be enough carpet for the bezel to cover it.

this is what you need for the "final touch" to your cockpit

Hurst has different variants of their boot

I found the stock boot a little binding for the Hurst shifter. I used a shift boot and trim from a '69-'70 with the factory Hurst shifter. Fit's way better.

Not sure why the picture keeps flipping. Sorry 'bout that.

Actually the first iteration you sent looks great! My car is day two and has been since she came under my custody, care and control so I ain't winnin' any concours events.

On second thought that design is prone to tearing.  I am liking Tomdeg's innovation as the better way to go.

I didn't get a chance to comment on your GT350 31 spline axle comment as you deleted it real quick. LOL. Hey, I get notifications on SAAC topics and boy I delete a lot of emails thanks to your spam posting every day(some of your longtime spam topics I quit following).

My boot kept splitting from the floating bezel so I went with the deluxe and no more boot splitting!

I think for those that want a more original look along with a Hurst shifter that the 69 /70 boot and floating plate looks better in that respect then deluxe plate that was never used in a 4 speed Shelby so good choice IMO.

Here is the 70 Hurst boot in my 69 428SCJ Mach1. The boots like to split at the top front. You can see the gap from the split in my pics below. I'll replace the boot this year and see what happens. The Hurst is much better than the Ford shifter in my Vert.
