I have seem to have seen a variance on Trans. I own a RUG-AE2 that I know is a real 69 CJ trans as it is stamped 9F150009 so a 69 Dearborn CJ trans(not in B9 registry). This trans has a drain plug on the bottom. Then I see what I believe is a real RUG AE2 out of a drag pack 69 car that does not have a drain plug on the bottom. Greasy patina trans with the correct tag on it. So I looked at a bunch of 69 B9s that sold on BaT and seen both types in those cars. Any idea what gives here? A running change during the year to eliminate the drain plug?
I dont the answer to the question, but are they the same case castings?
Probably serviced or rebuilt, sometimes they tap them to make it easier to drain
The transition from a bottom drain plug to none occurred in 1969. The original transmission to my 69 gt350 conv (#362)has a drain plug while the original trans to my 69 Fairlane 500 SCJ car has none. I've had a number of other 1969 toploaders and they came both ways.

Thanks Dave, its nice to hear voices of experience.

Yes ;)
Mine has no drain plug. I tend to agree with the above statements, i.e., that it is an early late thing and you would need to compare the build dates to get a better handle on it.
I have seen about a dozen of these transmissions and I do not recall having seen the drain plug version so chances are finding that RUG AE2 will cost you more money. Particularly since the B9 guys are involved in that which tends to drive up the market value considerably.

Thanks Dave. The trans I have at home I mentioned is 9F150009 so a somewhat early to mid production installed trans. I'd have to check my GT350 vert (May 6 build) to see if it has the plug but am pretty sure it does. So is it safe to say toploaders in a 68 should have the drain plug?
Might want to record, share and compare serial numbers (from the transmission plant) on the tag.
Just a thought

Do you know how to read the tags for the numbers below the "RUG-AE2"?
Thats a sequential transmission plant serial number. Not related to the number of the individual car
Change came late 69 production. Also change from C7OR to D0ZZ tail
Trans drain plug started disappearing spring 69 about same time as gas tank drain plugs also. Rug AZ 1970 dozr trans tailshafts were only on the cj and b9s cars because they used the factory hurst shifter and they have a unique reverse rod unlike the 70 b2 and 351c cars and both 70 trans had there own shifter mounting plate.

By any chance you have a part number for the CJ/B9 mounting plate for the 70 Hurst? Check out this trans for sale. Could very well be out of a Boss 429 with the added Hurst shifter. It has the 4 speed gear reducer on it. I wonder if anyone has asked the guy to check for a partial Vin on the mounting flange. Is that a correct mounting plate on the rear tail shaft for a 70? https://www.ebay.com/itm/305010147704

I have the plate but I'd have to go look at it to get the engineering number off of it.
I have sold this entire set up before broken up into individual components.
The transmission sold for $2,200. The gear reducer $1,250. The shift rods with levers, $150 each. The shifter mechanism $1,200. So that price as I see it is a pretty good deal.
It is easy to break it up and sell individually since so many people have part of the set up and just missing parts. So to discount it to sell as one complete set up is not a good marketing plan.
It is listed correctly as it was used on both the B9 and the CJ.
At one point I was looking to trade it for a 67 GT500 transmission. A number of folks offered to buy it outright but I never found any 67 GT500 transmissions at all offered.
Those if original to a particular car would have the Ford VIN stamped into the bottom of the transmission so I suppose any of them would be very rare to find available. By contrast, this B9/CJ seems to be much more common in comparison?
So that is the set up I am using in my '67 '500. Tough nuggies to everyone else. 8)
I suppose, "beggars can't be choosers"?
70 b9 hurst shifter mounting plate is unique because of b9 engine mounted forward . The shifter setup in 69 trans photo is hurst over the counter (like most 69 ford shifters being replaced by hurst) as thats why ford started putting hurst shifters from factory starting in 1970. The 70-71 ford hurst shifter are unique as the chrome handle can be removed from shifter when its installed in the car as its got a flat locking spring down in the shifter box. I know a guy who would remove his 70 b2 shifter handle when parked to keep anybody from stealing his car back years ago when guys would drive these cars way before trailer queens were being built.
