Title: Gasoline is killing my neighbours
Post by: Jakobs67gt500 on May 06, 2023, 09:42:43 AM
Hi Shelby'ers
#1739 GT500 1967 here.
I have a beautiful fully restored car.
I bought two new carburetors from our friend Freddy
I live anyhow in a large apartment block, and the entire garage is smelling badly of gasoline when I fire it up.
Although not original, does anybody have experience with an EFI system, and do I need 1 or 2?
If 1, do I have to change manifold, or can I blind one of the intakes?
All input much appeeciated ✨️👌

Not familiar with the EFI, but it's very normal to smell like 100 + octane cologne when you start up our old fossils

A properly tuned and set up carburetor should NOT smell like gas from normal operation.

Modern EFI systems will require you to change the intake manifold. The EFI throttle body replaces a single carb (not two)

You can not block off one of the openings

You may consider the 1968 Shelby intake if switching intakes

There are associated other modifications to support the system like a change or modification of the fuel system (possible gas tank, fuel pump, fuel sender and return fuel lines for example) that will need to be changed also

To add to the conversation a large impact modifications like described will be viewed by main stream enthusiasts as hurting the historic value of the car which may or may not matter now but something to consider all the same.

Holley makes a dual quad EFI system. It's made mainly for big performance engines but is very tunable. Check with their tech dept.

That does not look like a Holley bolt pattern for the EFI units. Add that to the to do  list.

Just have to order the right one.  https://www.holley.com/blog/post/carburetor_flange_guide/

Sniper EFI currently offers the following bolt pattern options:
BBD/2GC Small Bore
2GC Large Bore
Holley 2300 2-BBL
Holley 4150/4160 4-BBL
Spreadbore (Q-Jet) 4-BBL
Holley 4500 4-BBL

There are ones that replace holley carbs. Here's one:

Just do a little Google research. As for fuel systems there's a few ways to go about it. Most systems return excess fuel to the gas tank or to a remote reservoir. You can buy a new gas tank that is already set up with a new high pressure fuel pump and a fitting for fuel return. You can also get a remote fuel system such as this one which makes everything super easy if you have a place to mount it:

Tune it.  Start it and drive it out of the garage quickly.  Tune it, TUNE IT.

Every old car smells like gas fumes and so does a new one when you take off the cat.converters.

Thank you very much for all your valuable input.

By guidance, I figured out that the vacuum hoses were not connected.
I will ask for some assistance in a new thread.
Again - 1000 thanks
Best regards
Jakob

And here is a true car guy,  well said

Can't escape from those old car fumes, no matter what you do

100 + octane cologne will be on your clothes, hair and in your pores....  SALUD !
