Title: Carb Tag Decoder
Post by: SCJ3126 on May 26, 2018, 01:25:03 AM
Need help decoding the original carb tag on my 1970 GT500.  I understand the engineering number C9AF - M - (1969 4-speed) and the date code  9BA (1969 Feb 1st wk  - matches the carb date code (921).   I assume the A is a design change designation?  I do not know how to decode the ""ED" .

Is there a decoder to understand what that is referencing?   Did this have anything to do with the conversion of the carb to manual choke? (the automatic choke tube was removed and a manual choke was installed in the conversion of '69 GT500's to '70 GT 500's)

The ED stands for Special ED.  ;D  Seriously it stands for "edited" that was to discribe what was done to modify the 1969 carb into the 1970 version which was to change the automatic choke into a manual choke. Very rare carb and tag. Only a 1970 GT500 thing.

Also the front bowl vent lever was removed & the vent hole pluged & the auto choke center side choke tube capped off & manifold choke tubes removed & a red choke decal put on dash frame above the manual choke cable knob.  I think these 70 holley carbs were removed  at KK plant in batches & converted over from auto to manual chokes then reinstalled in groups & werent marked so they got put back on the same car the carb was removed from as KK workers didnt care about date codes only getting N carbs back on autos & M carbs back on 4 speeds. The reason i think they were done this way is because all the 70 gt 500s i seen have date code carbs that are out of line from when car was built. I have seen unmolested 70 gt 500s with reinstalled manual choke converted carbs that were date coded 5 monthe before car was built & i have an EDited  70 carb tag that is dated dec 68.

Thanks for the great information Ed!
The carb has the changes you mentioned.  The car was built on June 11, 1969, so the carb date code (921) would be 4 months prior to the build date on my car.

Thanks!
