Title: 67 GT500 Marti Report

Went to Marti site to order a report for my 67 GT500 3131. The Marti form requests both the Shelby serial # and the underlying Ford serial #. Since the door tag was removed at the Shelby factory, where is the underlying Ford serial #? Is there another location or can it be deciphered from the Shelby serial #?

On a '67, it should be under the Shelby serial number tag on the driver side inner fender under the hood.

Drill out one of the rivets and you should be able to rotate the tag to reveal the Ford #.

Here is mine from #02597 when I verified that the car was what it was supposed to be.

Also, if you haven't contact Dave Mathews the '67 SAAC Registrar to be sure you car is verified and on record with SAAC.

Charlie D,

I'd be careful removing the tag rivet.  I think it would be a better idea to loosen the fender bolts on the passenger side and have a peek under the fender lip.  The VIN should be in a location that mirrors the driver's side fender apron.  Looking on the underside of one of the fenders to see the reverse characters has also been known to work.  The reason I say this is two fold.  First, if the rivets are original, they won't be after they are removed.  Secondly, tampering with a vehicle VIN is a federal offense.  So better to find the Ford VIN in an area that won't cause issues.  Just my opinion, others may have different ideas.  And FWIW, the last four digits of the Ford VIN on my car (03040) were stamped on the lower side at the back of the transmission case (not the extension housing).

Since the transmission is not permanently attached to the body I would not choose to rely on it but only, maybe, used to confirm one found stamped into the uni-body sheet metal. Of course any and all have been faked on cars for decades so only one part of a much larger puzzle if your trying to confirm a car IME

Pretty sure Charlie is the original owner of his car (or his wife is) so he knows the history completely.

Just for understanding, 67 Shelby´s never came with a door tag, so its fine that yours dont have one.

That was the intent, however some cars did not have them removed, but that was a small quantity and short time period.

JD is correct that the door tags were intended to be removed and a small number of cars were missed.
However, after several years of tracking these cars, it appears it was a random oversight, spread out throughout production.
More info can be found on our 'SRG' page, in the attached link, including a list of '67 Shelby's with the door tags as of May 2019.
Since that time a couple more have been found.

Thanks for the advice. I did locate the serial # stamp on the right front inner fender, but one digit is pretty difficult to identify. Attaching a photo.  I read it as 67410F5A0 ?5? 131. That 10th digit did not strike cleanly. Look like a 5 to you?

No photo that I can see...if your car is #67410F5A03131 then that digit that you think maybe a "5" should be a "3".

It is highly discouraged to discuss the actual FORD VIN and best to keep that private for a'65-'67 Shelby's.

Not ALL GT500's had the typical 'Q' code stamped in the hidden Ford VIN.
Early cars, such as Little Red, had a 'S' stamped for the engine code.
On rare occasions an error was made and a 'K' code engine stamp was made on a '67 GT500.
Although rare, these cars are known by the '67 registrar and should be discussed with him if found.

The first step and priority is getting the Shelby American documents; such as the Production Order and Invoice.
They show exactly how the car was completed and optioned at LAX and how it shipped to the selling dealer.

Getting a Marti report should be secondary. They are great for the Ford base unit information, such as the interior trim code.
However, FORD did not have any records of how Shelby American completed the cars, such as what options were added or changed.

Thanks Rich. I have all the documents from Shelby to the dealer and I believe I communicated with you a couple years ago so you could have the information for your project. Just as well the photo of the fender ID did not upload! I'll take your suggestion and leave the Marti report behind, can always find a use for the $$ elsewhere.

Not sure if Ford is still doing their 999 reports, but some of the GT500 reports have the "S" VIN on the paperwork even though you send them the "Q" VIN.
