Title: Tires - Goodyear - John Bessey - Bella
Post by: rmarble57 on May 28, 2021, 11:35:19 AM
Better pictures to come when the weather cooperates, but wanted to give a shout-out to John Bessey and Bella at We Keep It Real Restorations for assisting with the transformation of these tires to have the Large GOODYEAR lettering.  For those interested, the tires are Avon CR6ZZ very soft compound purchased through Roger Kraus Racing.  The process involves shaving off the Avon raised lettering and then applying the Goodyear letters.  Picture of the 3 tires show the progression from Avon lettering, shaved and Goodyear letters.  They do this for other applications as well, but my early '67 had the larger letter Speedway 350's originally and I wanted the look, but also wanted to be able to stay in my lane when driving and I refuse to put the reproduction bias tires on the car.  The handling is massively improved as well as traction.  The Kelsey Hayes Magstars are original riveted units which have been taken apart, replated and put back together with rivets just like the originals.  Some say I know how to spend money...................Jus' sayin'.

Randy, The tires look great.  Who did you have do the restoration on the wheels ? Was it one place or did you have to job it out to several? What was the approximate cost involved?

  Your car looks great!
My question: are you saying that they took the centers out, replated the origial rims, and then put them back together, with original looking rivets?
  Thanks.

These were taken apart.  Original rims rechromed to show quality.  Centers restored.  Then riveted back together using original style rivets.   Cost I believe was around $1250 each not including the original magstar.  So around $5000 and you have to provide the perfect donor rims.

Wow, that looks fantastic!  Those Avon's are wonderful tires aren't they?  The only issue with them is that they will occasionally throw a pebble or two, but a small price to pay for the performance and safety that they offer.

Those look great!  What size Avon's did you go with front and back?

Randy,
The car looks fantastic!! Can you give the tire specs please? I'm trying to get a good idea on sizing. I think the 225/65 up front and 245/60 for the rears will be what I use. I'm a little nervous as I don't have the tires to mock up before paint. Can you post any closer pics of the tires and possibly fender/ quarter panel up close shots? Any help would be great!! It's hard to determine these tire sizes without have something to go by. Only other car I've found has different sizes front and back.
Thanks!!!

Just a square imposed over license plate so it cannot be read.

Been away from the computer for a bit, but wanted to circle back to the questions.

For tire sizes, I went with 225/60-15 all the way around.  I have absolutely no rubbing issues whatsoever and for my taste, that size is the widest you can put on the stock wheels or you end up with a bulge in the middle.  FYI:  my car does not have any extra holes for the "Shelby Lowering" of the front end so it has an uphill attitude.

Section width of the original E70-15's is 8.4" and the 225/60-15 is 9.13 so IMHO just about the widest thing you would want on the original width rims.
If you are running other type wheels, I believe that all of the additional width of tire on the rear would need to be on the inside.  I wouldn't put them any closer to the outside wheel lip.

I'm cut from a different cloth that some, in that I want my car to appear as original as possible (he says that while he has webers and Tri-Y headers under the hood), but I also am going to drive the car as much as I want and not think of it as a piece of art.  I don't like cars that don't start, handle, run smoothly(fast) and represent what good ol' Shel would have wanted.

I have the utmost respect for those that chase the Concours Crowns and their place in the books is necessary for the Marque, just as mine is to drive and enjoy the experience.  I know the limitations and don't pretend that 1967 technology comes close to modern cars, but at the time my brain was infected with Shelby Mustangs (1967), they were "The Going Thing".

off topic sorry John B ;-) but tangential to the Webers posted above - I have a complete weber 48 IDA's setup for Small Block 289 with linkage, COBRA manifold tapped for vacuum lines and collector manifold for brake vacuum, 4th iteration Italian Webers and 70's COBRA intake. PM me if interested.

I just drove 14 hours home today from Ford Carlisle and saw your picture. In the picture you have the shorter 65/66 hose and not the longer 67/68 hose regardless of how it is stamped.Just thought you would want to know. It looks very stretched to the limit. 67/68 needed the extra length given the different radiators compared to 65/66 style. I have heard of others having that same short hose problem with the Marti hoses. Sorry I only have extra NOS 67/68 correct hoses and can not offer a correct repro solution. I know that they are out there because I have seen them.

I love the way these tires turned out. I am interested in doing the same to a set of tires that I purchased from Diamondback. They sell them now "pre-smoothed". All that they need is the addition of the stick on lettering. Can I ask where you purchased the Goodyear lettering from? Also, would it be possible to get the measurements from you on the lettering? Hight of the letters, and the spacing in between would be very helpful :)

I gave you a new front plate.....

You can buy the lettering kit but the hard part is buffing off the old lettering and blending the sidewall just right. It's an art. You can even get creative.

Of course, you could have just gotten a signed front plate. I hear it's going to be mandatory at SAAC 51 that every Shelby has to have at least one signature from the old man on it in order to attend the show.
