Title: Transmission pops out of gear question
Post by: esiegel on March 28, 2021, 10:50:16 PM
My 66 T-10 transmission recently started popping out of second gear when coasting. Tried adjusting shift linkage but didn't help much. Does anyone have suggestions?

Popping out of gear is a very common occurrence with many T10's. Be sure to have some one rebuild it that is familiar with T 10's . If given to a typical re builder who knows how to rebuild T 10's but is not familiar with solving the popping out of gear problem you risk the rebuild not solving the popping out of gear problem.Miles transmission is a master at solving the T10 problem for example. You can go through Shelby Parts and Restoration.Shelby Parts has overseen the rebuild of several aluminum T10's for me that had the problem

Agree with Bob. Shelby parts and restoration are the ones who did mine.
Best wishes

In my view, it's only a matter of time before the t10 starts popping out of second. I lost count of how many wind up doing it.

I think it is the rule rather then the exception.

In addition to the internals, another source of pop out is a crack in the aluminum tail housings.

+1 Tailshaft housings crack often. Popping out of gear is a fairly easy fix with the right parts . I've done about a hundred of them.

Thanks everyone for your help and information.
Does anyone know how hard it is to remove by yourself?

Most anyone can do it. "Some" set it on their chest ( I used to) , others use a floor jack , few use a real trans jack. Pull drive shaft , parking brake cables , linkage, cross member and bell housing bolts and slid it out. I used to do it in 30 minutes or less.

I'm glad you said "used to".  That brings back some horrible memories!  Lying on my back, arms aching holding up a cast iron toploader and gear oil running down my arm into my arm pit.  Ah, the good ol' days.

You should come to my house and pull my tranny!!! :P I would LOVE to put my T-10 back in the car!

All the best,

Steve

There are several 'fixes' that a knowledgeable rebuilder knows. One can be filing the detent notch so it requires a little more pressure to shift out of second gear.

+ different springs /"dogs" in the synchro assemblies. I only modify the levers in the cover as a last resort. I have changed to a higher tension spring in several I've rebuilt.

I had a total nightmare with two T10s. I had massive help in here and a pair of words said to me are the most important you will hear

"Hooked sliders"

This is a the solution.

My customer had his rebuilt with Hooked sliders and that was the solution after my multiple attempts to sort

Yes I have used them for 25+ years. Actually developed by Ford in '68.
