I've been a long time classic Mustang owner an enthusiast. The recent auction of 5R002 has peaked my interest about Shelby's, especially the R models. I have been reading and studying pictures and grasping how instrumental these cars were in establishing the destiny of Mustangs. Truly an amazing machine, so simply and raw!
enough about me...
What were the R model door panels made from? is it crinkle paint, or some pictures look like refrigerator material the way they appear to be texture?
Door panels are embossed aluminum.

I have a set of R-model door panels and clips that I'd be willing to sell.
The panels from Cobraautomotive are unpainted - what was the original finish ?
Black semigloss or matte? Or unpainted bare aluminum?

The material came a semigloss black on one side and was then cut to size.
Thank you, Bob !
My R panels came painted in semi-gloss from C. Automotive.
Thanks for the info.
How were the originals attached?

Metal clips. You have to put holes in them that correspond to the clip holes in the doors.
The Cobra-Aut. ones do come predrilled with clips.

Those look great! Do you have a closer picture to show the texture?
Attached are R-Model door panels made from stucco embossed aluminum sheet. My guess is that Shelby bought mill finish sheet and painted them, as pre-painted sheets back in the 60's was not common. Mill finish aluminum sheet was easily available in any fairly large city.
Hope these photos help.

FYI the fold down latch delete covers were typically made out of similar texture aluminum material.
Great info an pictures! thank you!
I hope I can soon get around to fitting my panels - will post photos then.
It should be straightforward - with one (unfortunate) exception... I need to cut holes for the window winders, because I need to retain the glass. Here in Germany it is very difficult (=almost impossible for side windows) to get Plexi windows approved for street.
If we are getting a new, harder lockdown soon (quite probably...) I have enough time....
Ok - work has started ! :)
Some photos from the raw material as delivered by Cobra Automotive.
Holes drilled for window winders (which I unfortunately need), first coat black is on (still wet/shiny on the photo).
Photos also show the clips that came with the panels.
I´ll keep you posted ! ;)
