As the title states, I'm looking for '67 GT500 car# 820 (full Shelby vin# 67400F2U00820). I owned this car as a kid (17 yo) and built it into a street racer that I raced off of Whittier Blvd, CA back in 1981-83. I lived in Downey, CA at the time and sold it to Duane Karam in '83, who lived in Glendora, CA. It was sold to a couple more guys in Glendora and the trail goes cold in 1990/91 when it was sold to a guy who supposedly owned some Boss 302 Mustangs and some Panteras and who claimed he planned to completely restore it. I built a 427 side oiler (stroked with a 428 crank) and changed the interior from white to balck. Could be in any condition now. Dave Mathews does not have any further info on it and I checked with Kevin Marti but no report has even been pulled on it. I would love the opportunity to buy it back or trade it for another one of my '67 GT500's that I currently own. I would like to offer a reward to anyone who can provide me with info that leads to me putting eyes on the car. I thank each and every one of you who took the time to read my post and assist in the effort to find this car.

Nice & cool to think that when in 83 i was graduating from high school & that car was running around in the next town over from me in Glendora .In my probable last 5 yr quest to find my current Nightmist /parchment car i looked at a probably everyone that came to market & there was not many ,but one in particular i remember a few yrs back was a weird car .It langquised on one of the dealer websites i forget which one probably Hemmings thats always been my go to ,& it was in LA Santa Monica area at a dealer there , what was weird about it (& you might find interesting) is that it was Nightmist blue but it had a mixture of parchment & black interior ,like it had started either black or parchment & someone switched out 1/2 of the interior to one or the other,which is what i didn't like about it .Then i clearly remember all of a sudden it ending up again on Hemmings at a at prominent dealer in Washington called Park Place Ltd where i had bought a Porsche from some years before , i remember looking at it again on there website .Hope that helps maybe in your search or you'd think you could do some kinda national vin # search, maybe if you got a contact in law enforcement .And my Nighmist car often cruises through Glendora if it makes you any happier lol

You need to run both VIN's if you haven't already. The Shelby VIN and the Ford VIN . Many times the car for whatever reason is registered with the Ford VIN instead of the Shelby one.

Dave Mathews assisted me in speaking with Kevin Marti to make sure the Ford VIN had never been used to pull a Marti Report but they would not give me the Ford VIN so I could check the Federal data base. I remember a story here in SoCal whereby some CHP officer(s) thought it was cute to force Shelby owners to register their car as a Ford Mustang using the Ford VIN but not certain if that's just a myth, it wouldn't surprise me though. I understand the security issues surrounding Kevin Marti or Dave providing me with the Ford VIN but I'd love to be able to search the Ford VIN as well.
I own several '67 GT500's and other collectible cars that I have purchased Marti reports for but Kevin Marti does not know me personally. I'm not the kind of guy to use that info for nefarious purposes but Kevin doesn't know that about me. Any chance you could ask him ? I'm sure he recognizes your name and trusts you. I have spoken to you a couple times about my cars and restoration markings, a roll bar from one of your very early cars that I own, etc but realize you don't know me personally either. Although I would like the Ford VIN for my records, I would also be ok with paying someone to search the Ford VIN if that's possible. I know the car was registered in 90/91 to John Frimand in Glendora, CA but I'm unsure past that date.

Yep that's the one I saw & was talking about ,& bummer I was hoping i was onto something there for you , that mash up interior is definitely weird looking & seemed to fit perfectly into your story ,& they list all the sold cars on there site actually looks like ,unless they got the vin wrong

Jim ,the Ford VIN being forced on Shelby owners to use on titles and registration is not a myth . It happened in the past and most likely still happens in some areas. Typically it is for uninformed reasons rather then malicious intent although I have been on the receiving end of such a inspector who took just a little too much delight in "bringing in a Shelby and sending out a Mustang". I would like very much to help you in your quest but I will not be able to help figure out your Ford VIN . I get asked 3 or 4 times a year since I know Dave could I find out the Ford VIN number for a given car or the Shelby number for a Ford VIN. I have never asked . I know that if Dave bends the rules for one he has to for all. I stand by ready to help in other ways if needed however. Bob

Thanks for the clarification on the CHP/DMV titling cars with the Ford VIN, it does not surprise me one bit, I've had my fair share of dealing with less than brilliant and even malicious people in those government entities. I appreciate any assistance whatsoever, whether it be reaching out to your list of contacts or asking people who may know who have collections, anything at all. I'll give Dave a call and see if he has contacts with a PI who can research the Ford VIN on a federal data base without giving it away.
