Title: brake calipers
Post by: RSOHC on August 30, 2020, 01:09:09 AM

Are the brake calipers for a 1968 GT500 unique to the car or should I turn them in as a core for rebuilding for others?

Originals have fomoco cast in them and even when installed if u know where to look can be seen so I would have the originals rebuilt.

They are not unique, but they are probably dated (cast) and have a Ford logo, the new ones are not likely to have.

Pay the core charge and save them.

Unless pitted, the '68 calipers are very easy to rebuild.  I disassembled mine, masked the bore, vapor blasted, powder coated and reassembled.  If like me prone to high pressure wash rotors calipers, spindle and control arms prior to detailing.  DOT 3 being hygroscopic  will attract and hold moisture pushed past the boot seal.  When reassembling use ample, silicon assembly grease to protect the bore and piston.
