Title: Heater Hose Fitting on GT500
Post by: JWH on April 12, 2020, 02:58:15 PM
Here is a picture of the heater hose fitting that attaches to the intake manifold. Is this the correct type of fitting for a GT500? My car was completed by Ford 1/26/67 and completed at SAI on 2/22/67.
Thanks.

Yes, all 500's used the tall nipple on the C7ZX.

Yup, that's the one but the gold will wash off and it will turn silver.

They are reproduced by Drake.

I keep looking back at my pictures and I can't find even one that shows that fitting as yellow cad? ALL the ones I see are silver, including my own?

That's the only color picture new I know of. Mine are of used cars in  "the field".

I always questioned that picture of Terry's car because of the color of the head gasket.

There was discussion here at one time about the color. It was Professor Gaines thought that they likely were all gold new and that the gold washes off in time like on the gold bolts as I recall the discussion?

Both my replacements are gold. The one on the manifold is not. It is silver.

I doubt either would be a deduction in Concourse if that's the point of the question?

gold is a dye.  they plate the part with clear (silver) cadmium   or zinc  and then dip it in the dye solution when its fresh out of the cleaning process.  If you spray it with oven cleaner it washes right off.   it disappears   with age    it provides just a smidge more corrosion protection than just silver plated

Drake is making both Chrome and Gold Dichromate now.  I bought a NOS Ford unit in the late 80's and had it chrome plated. ( Not the Drake Chrome)

So by process of elimination, this one comes off of the water pump, correct?

Thanks for all of the replies. Jim I looked at a lot of images and the fitting off of the intake is hidden in almost everyone. The pictured you posted gives the best view I've seen of the installed fitting.

That is correct for the GT500.  That is indeed the water pump elbow.

I have seen vintage pictures of both the zinc dichromate and the zinc silver so I believe they came ether way.

I live a sheltered life. Terry's is the ONLY gold fitting I ever saw new. In fairness though, I haven't been keeping a spread sheet over these years and there are so many things going on under the hood of a 67 GT500 that not being mesmerized by the bright shiny objects is seemingly almost impossible?

What else besides oven cleaner should I avoid?

+1  I have seen them both ways. Some were also very light on the dichromate dip.
In the day , it was done for rust prevention , not "beauty" like the reproductions. The fitting off of the water pump was always silver cad/ zinc. At least what "I" saw was.

+1 BB 67 and very early 68 straight up 2 piece waterpump fitting is typically plated zinc silver.
