The studio has posted the release date for the movie. Is anyone in SW Florida interested in attending as a group?
Realease date is June 28. I do not have any high hopes or expectations. Maybe I will wait for a year or two to see it when it is free on the airplane flight that I take to a future SAAC convention so I can recover with a heavy dose of reality when I get to my destination. 8)

Weird
Very weird. At first I thought You Tube had jumped to a different video and I missed it. So I watched it again just to make sure. Doesn't relate to any of the pictures that have been posted from the movie set either. Also, was that a Pantera in the desert? I have to go back and slow that down again too-
yup.
Not the real trailer. It says it is a fan based production. We'll have to wait a while for the real trailer I suspect.

I think Bale pulls off the Ken Miles look okay here. Thoughts
Usually we see Miles standing around with no shirt. He was a skinny guy! I think of him with a crew cut...very little hair on the sides.
That's true. But if they found an identical to Miles then the guy might not be able to act. So a balancing test seems to apply. That is, who looks the most like the real life character yet also possesses good acting ability. I'm still looking forward to see on the big screen. It's a miracle they even made the movie especially with the likes of bigger stars.
Image of Ken Miles...
There's a little bit of similarity going on there especially the patina of his face. I wonder if Bale will use his natural British accent.

Better than Tom Cruise but not optimal I would agree. They were floating the idea of Cruise at some point weren't they?
Yes, they were and yes better than Kruze
Is there a way we can all go see this at SAAC 44? It will be released June 28th. What would it cost to screen it at the convention?
The next thing you'll want to do is go to the Dependable Drive In Theater in Moon, PA to see it. :)
I mentioned it in the other thread, but I can't believe they didn't get Matthew McConaughey to be CS.
Maybe some of it had to do with certain actors getting along with one another.
I seem to recall McConaughey is not part of that Hollyweird social circle Damon and Bale are vocal members of.
Well, The fact that Bale is in it means I will NOT pay to see it. I wonder how they'll work in a lecture on non-existent global warming? You know it's coming.
Once the movie is out we are all richer on paper with bigger security problems.

I can't wait for this movie to come out. There's been so many super hero/Star wars/Star trek movies over the last decade. I like them all but a great car story on one of my favorite topics with a big budget, a great story and little to no CGI will be something that I'm really looking forward to.

Superformance Camera Cars used for filming
RCR built the factory prototype replica cars (gt40, ferrari, etc.) for the movie. SPF provided turn key Cobras.
yall ready for this...coming to a theater near you
Cool poster, but someone should've photoshopped out what looks like a black electric fan on the radiator.
I realize...these are Superformance cars.
My hopes for this film are totally corroded.
Start with the images of the replicas in reply #66. The real cars didn't have mirrors and that would be a simple thing to correct if they had researched original photos. Then there's car number 98. Who drove that?
Did anyone see the interview of Matt Damon and Christian Bale up in the flag station just prior to the Indy 500? The interviewer asked what was one thing they took away from doing the film. Damon answered, paraphrasing, ". . .that driving 230 mph, they didn't know whether or not they could slow down. . .". Really? I think adequate braking capacity would be a key design feature of car entered in a 24 hour race.

Quote. . ."this true story of the triumph of the misfits."
Misfits? They were a talented group of racers and fabricators that were at the top of their racing game.
For me, it'll be the little visual things that would be so simple to make accurate that'll be most annoying because people making the film didn't really care. It's Hollywood, but ultimately, maybe I'm too close to the subject.
"misfits"? It depends on the synonym you choose to select?
This is really a story of how David slayed Goliath. That being Shelby (the chicken farmer) vs Ferarri (the Commadere). Of course the wild card here is Ford's personal money and aid to bankroll Shelby with anything he needed. Ford could hardly be called anything but an elite. In this case. Probably the puppet master?
On the surface it plays as class struggle. A team on the balls of their ass slays the European elite. "Beaten by an irrigation engine" is what Ferarri said in reference to the 427.
The reality was that there were two things going on with Ford, he hated Ferarri and he wanted a larger share of new car sales in the US. Now that part is really secondary but in 1970 when after the internal meeting with Ford showed that nothing had changed percentage wise after all of this money was spent by Ford, they just pulled out their money from racing not even overnight, instantaneously.
Ford had hired a "gunslinger" in Shelby to do the dirty work. Being in the right place at the right time helped alot. If nothing else Shelby was a clairvoyant that saw far beyond reading tea leaves.
He clearly saw a lot of raw talent just hanging around the bars and topless clubs of LA and offered them an opportunity to join a team to go big time and beat the elites.
If you think about it, how many of Shelby's team got hired by Ford and brought back to Detroit? It was the opposite. Ford sent "monitors" out to LA to manage a rag tag team. When the "project" was done, they all went back home to "Detroit".
This is all a little like the military. It's kind of like the "Joint Chiefs" find qualified expendables to go on a one way mission. One where they hope for dead heros and not surviving ones that will rise to power and challenge their power in the future.
So really when it comes down to it, the disappointments here are not by misrepresentations, they are by what synonyms are selected or maybe the wrong inflections of a characters voice in issuing an order.
See the film and enjoy it for what it's worth. Maybe it will even turn out to be an enjoyable interpretation of a successful human event?
That's what I plan to do.
Sounds like it's worth seeing. don't know where I read this quote ? but always liked it "A bunch of hot rodders from California kicked Ferrari's ass" ;)

Watched the trailer a few times more myself and with guys my office. Overall consensus is enthusiastic. Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby totally works for me as does Christian Bale for Ken Miles. There has to be some compromise between exact physical looks and professional acting skills. They provide that blend.

Just curious, and not to be contrary:
How many of us who have given really fast rides to people, on a track or the street, have ever had anyone cry?
I've had riders screaming, yelling, closing eyes, getting car sick and even getting mad (certain women), but never anyone crying.
the adreline rush you experience will set off all your bodily functions and emotions, fear, laughter, anxiety, happiness plus many others...

I've had riders screaming, yelling, closing eyes, getting car sick and even getting mad (certain women), but never anyone crying.
Maybe they were tears of joy at such an amazing ride.

My wifes fingernails are still stuck in the dash padding on my '68. It was only about 115mph? I had to slow down. She couldn't breath. She was doing one of those negative screams where she was sucking the air in rather then out and she was ready to pass out. Go figure? :o

Mike you sir are terrible...lol
Maybe slight change in location as we spoke to FM yesterday.
As you recall he worked out a deal with the folks at the SW mall when they replayed the John Wick and the original Bullit Movie to put together a car show, secure parking and then watch the movies.
Let's see what he comes up with.

I'm told that the use of Medical Marijuana helps reduce the possibility of an epiphany? It's probably advisable to reduce the possibility of epiphamizing? You can swallow your tongue?

the lovely hedly lamarr (actress) sued mel brooks for using the name hedley lamarr ( played by harvey korman) in the movie blazing saddles
she/they settled out of court
A side note to this thread - at the SAAC 44 banquet the gathered were asked to raise their hand if they thought Matt Damon was a good choice to play Carroll Shelby in the upcoming movie - no one raised their hand, silence.
The room was very full, hardly any seats were available.

Just got into a heated argument with my dad (he loves to spar in the worst way) about going to see the preview on Septemeber 14th. He says it's too far downtown yet he plans to drive 90 miles back to Toronto in his minivan. He wanted to know the ticket price and I should not have told him it's $85. He said forget it despite my buying. He grew up in the depression. He has way better money sense than me. Mine is a time thing because we never know how long we have above ground. It is all about balancing finances versus life experiences.
You know I agree and respect your fathers and your views
But having said that, my father was also the same as yours.
Got to the point he did not want to leave the house or spend money on unnecessary items.
Once I saw this pattern I took a very different approach with him.
If we had to go somewhere I would not tell him how far, I would mention "just a few minutes way". Once in the car we would talk all the way to our destination. The travel time would be a non issue and before he knew it we had arrived at our destination.
As far as price at a restaurant, vacation or an event, I am ashamed to say I would flat out lie to him. He would ask how much for a football game? I would relate the price to when he was much younger and reply eight dollars for entry. In reality it was over ten times the amount. Then and only then he would enjoy outings, food, vacations and yes even the two dollar movies that I would take him to see...

Thank you for sharing, Tony. You have much wisdom in your approach to life. Sometimes tomorrow means never but in this case he simply doesn't want to go. He wants to hold out to November. So be it.
Maybe you should get him a subscription to Netflix for his birthday or Christmas. Tons of TV and movies, and "Hey Dad, it's all free. They had a special on the internet."
Good morning, one of my favourite movies is Ferris Bhueller Day Off. In that movie he qoutes " Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. "
That is the issue with us humans, "we" think "we" have time ... see the movie. Enjoy it for what is...entertainment

I just saw the trailer last night... the movie should be fun. Definitely looking forward to it.
I thought that the quote from Henry "the Deuce" saying it's not the first time that Ford has been to war could have been the basis for the name of the documentary movie "the 24 Hour War"?

Aloha Don,
Attached are directions to Telluride. What we find unusual is that in Colorado it takes over two hours to drive 85 miles.
Let's see how long it takes to drive 80 miles in the great State of Florida;
How long does it take to go 80 miles if you're going 80mph? The answer is simple.
80 miles is the about half the width of Florida. Florida is where Disney world is.
Disney world is where Mickey Mouse lives. Mickey Mouse is in many movies.
Movies are made in Hollywood, California.
California is where the gold rush happened. Often, gold rushers would find a single gold nugget.
Obviously gold is good because it has a monetary value.
We also know that time is money. How much money is one gold nugget worth?
One hour. And there is your answer.
Something peculiar about Colorado...
Trust me Florida traffic can be just as bad as Colorado. from that area in Colorado to the museum depending on traffic that figure is on the high side. The last miles are lots of stop and go lights. On Saturday morning you should be able to do this in less than 2 hrs
anyone counting that's three
agreed florida traffic is very, very bad...

I saw it!!!!! At TIFF.
We saw it with Christian Bale, Matt Damon, and the director and some of the cast in the balcony next to us. Movie got a standing ovation. Roy Thomson Hall was filled to the roof.
Matt Damon played a passable Shelby. There were times he got the accent and voice just right. I closed my eyes and thought I was listening to Shelby giving a speech at a SAAC dinner. He's too short and we only knew Shelby as an old man, but I think I think he would approve. He had lots of balls in the air in '64 and '65 and they capture how he had to deal with all that. Some of the original crew can comment.
I never met Ken Miles but from all I've read, Chritian Bale nailed it. He lost 70 pounds after his role in "Vice" to play on older, skinny British race car driver who did not suffer fools gladly. He must have spent a lot of time speaking to the Miles family.
Leo Beebe is portrayed as the villain. We met him one year; I'm not sure if he gets a fair shake in the script but it makes a better story. Same with HF2 Ferrari etc. But they do tell the whole story about the attempt by Ford to buy Ferrari.
The biggest mistake is everyone sits in Cobra fenders and hoods and jump over doors etc. which no one ever does but it looks cool. The audience howled when Shelby takes Ford for a ride in a Mk2. The racing scenes were fantastic.
Yes I will see it again, I'm taking my team from work to see it and I'm buying the blu Ray version as soon as I can get my hands on it.
It will make you all feel very proud. I wore my white and black"CobraCobra,Cobra shirt and everyone looked and pointed at my muttering in hushed tones. Dig yours out in November!
^^^ Thanks for the detailed report! :) :)
Yes, thank you very much for your synopsis. I hope the movie wins several awards. How cool is that to be sitting in such close proximity to the actors?!
Best,
Richard E.
Glad to hear it's at least a non-embarrassment of a movie, from a Shelby car owner's perspective.
Also glad that there's a film that brings Carroll, Miles, et al, into the consciousness of the general public. They deserve the recognition.
But, it would have been very interesting if the old man had been alive during the production, and got to be a consultant, if not a producer.
If Damon actually got to talk with Carroll at length, he probably would have been able to do a better job portraying him. And, it would've been fun to hear about Carroll's comments on everything to do with the film.
Does Damon swear as often and as creatively as CS did? When I worked for him, he once told me "I want that car as shiny as a kernel of corn up a goat's ass." That's Carroll.
its going to be great !

That was considered for 44 but the prospect of needing chicken wire in front of the screen to protect it from thrown beer bottles was a no-go for the theater. There was also talk of needing to mount barbed wire to keep the ya-hoo's from climbing over the fence.
wonder when it comes out on dvd, will they have the extra footage as a bonus to this marvelous film ?

Our local paper has a Cineplex magazine on Saturdays, in it there is a small bit about the film (opens here, Toronto, Canada
November 15th.), they say "prickly British race driver Ken Miles" Any one know what his personality was like ? I know he was
pissed after Le Mans '66.
Mike
To us he was a man's man, spoke what was on his mind. Probably not to many people liked him back then, but today is understood and revered.

Definitely a man's man, Tony.
Just look at this quote I found on the site you posted. Very profound.
"You know, I'd rather die in a racing car than get eaten up by cancer"- Ken Miles
Tony, thanks for the link, and deathsled for you comment, I knew a bit about Miles, was lucky to see him race up here in Canada, 8) at Mosport a number of times, Cobra, Cooper King Cobra, Tiger, he even drove a Porsche 906 here in'66.
Mike
I missed out. I was only three years old at the time. I wish I could have seen Miles race live. Especially the flying Mustang at the first race in Texas. I have Bill Neal's lithographs of the flying GT 350 both signed by CS. Fond memories of meeting THE MAN back in the 90s. But hey, born in 1963, that was a good year for the Cobra, right?

That's fairly typical regarding title changes. My dad worked on Sylvester Stalone's movie "Driven" when it was filming in Toronto and he said the movie title at that point was called "Champs" and he wore an onset baseball cap that had "Champs" written on it. He said they might call it "Driven" instead. I think they were floating a third name at the time. He worked on the lighting scenes for the nighttime driving in downtown Toronto up in a crane. He never watched the movie but said he didn't think much of it anyway.

Went to the 3:30pm IMAX show this afternoon. Wow. This really was a tribute to Ken Miles and well deserved. IMAX is a must - the sounds and rumbling vibrations, especially the last 40 minutes at Lemans, are visceral. If only they pumped in the smells of burnt fuel and rubber. I originally didn't like the choice of Damon as Shelby, but he played him well. Bales was fantastic as Miles.

Oye! Don't go punching hanging sides of beef unless you want a broken hand and dislocated shoulder! Don't ask me how I know.
Best to sit in the car in the garage at night and just make car engine noises? Losing your license at a Social Security age and being older then the Judge (who you coached in Little League) is kind of a "life changing experience". Definitely not roll model imagery. Expensive too.
I suppose humiliating as well when the Judge asks you to apologize to the arresting officer and promise not to hit anyone anymore too?
You know you meet some interesting people at those Probation Officer monthly meetings. :(
Saw it last night at the only 4k IMAX in New England in Reading Mass. Entertaining for sure and more importantly to me I hope it sparks interest in these cars and the Shelby American story amongst the youngsters who see it.

Congratulations to Christian Bale for winning the Golden Globe nomination as lead actor in a drama for his performance as racing legend Ken Miles in Ford vs Ferrari ( a.k.a. The Ken Miles story) :)
Sadly, Matt Damon was not mentioned by the Foreign Press Association and did not get nominated in any category for his performance as Carroll Shelby. :'(
Gifts from the rising sun, thank you Nori San
But wait there's more
