As we make our way through what can only be described as uncharted territory, I'd like to post an update about the SAAC-45 National Convention.
At this point in time...
we are still a GO for Indy. Our future right now is in the hands of the track management; they still have the calendar open for June events.
We are continually preparing and in planning mode, which includes a variety of "what-if" scenarios. The best thing we can do right now is keep a watchful eye and make the best decisions as factual information comes in, to ensure the health and safety of everyone who passes through the gates.
We are working with SVRA on this date and have discussed alternative timing and venues, if necessary.
Trust us in that we have discussed Plans "B", "C", "D" and "E"... to be sure we have a National Event sometime in 2020.
You all will be the second to know if we have to change venues and dates.
Remember, we got through the gas shortage in 1979 and the turbulence in 2009.. we will continue to plan for 2020.
Please take care of yourself and your loved ones and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Any idea if there will be any celebrity guests (e.g., Chuck Cantwell) at SAAC 45? Thanks.
SAAC-45 Cancelled
I hope we can do Indy again in the future.
Be well everyone and a special thanks to Ron and SAAC.
Any chance of SAAC 45 being re-scheduled to later in the year ?
Just returned from Mid-Ohio Bob, they placed a bunch of Covid nonsense on everyone just to have the race out in the middle of nowhere. Their was talk of rescheduling the SVRA race at Indy for later this year, so SAAC 45 could be piggybacked (even in a modified state) to incorporate the race weekend.
Whether Roger wants a SAAC meet at Indy at this point might be the big question, INDY racing and possibly sports car type racing might take precedence.

I am sure the PENSKE organizations have the most stringent safety measures in place. He will probably follow the rest of Americas largest sports organizations... NASCAR, NHRA, NFL, NBA, NBL and the rest. They cant afford to have a super spreader in the garage , offices, or in the stands. My guess would be no events with crowds in the stands this year. There might be a few little back yard venues out there that don't care what happens to them or their spectators, that's what will probably be available for us racers. :-\
We need the border to be reopened.
Most all of Europe has closed its borders to the US, Travel restrictions everywhere. Not sure which BORDER you are referencing but if you want to go to old MEH -EECO go right ahead. Street tacos are waiting for visitors.
Interestingly spectators were allowed at Mid-Ohio and the fans did turn out.... most without the face coverings. Officials did temp everyone coming into the facility and SVRA officials wore masks and asked that drivers/crews wear them when being tech'd, etc.
You are probably right 427heaven regarding spectators at Indy events unless they follow their neighboring state of Ohio and use their guidelines. Which, while not mandatory, were the bear minimum to appease state officials.
So moving along where will SAAC 46 be???
Randy, or will it be called SAAC 45 2.0?
I noticed that the Bloomington Gold Corvette event scheduled for Indy in June had been re-scheduled for Sept..... so I was just wondering if SAAC-45 might be so lucky.....
States are beginning to shut down again... Beaches are locked down in California, guessing we can write off 2020 for mass gatherings. A sign of the times- :-\
No one anticipated the sadistic nature of this virus. I am on my third infection right now. First in Dec through Feb . Major hit before it was "known". Second hit first week of March lasted about two weeks and now this hit finishing up a two week hit and it should be gone in a few more days. "I" thought once I had it , I would be immune. Boy was I wrong. The relapses are NOWHERE near as severe as the initial so the antibody IS working , but it really struggling to fight off the virus. "To me" the key is wearing a mask to stop the spread.

I am still working very hard to have the North East Regional SAAC meet the end of September. Lots of juggling, re-structuring, changing events to outdoors, and so far still a go. Come on East and enjoy a smaller and more enjoyable Shelby weekend!
As far as 2021, My thoughts would be either try Indy again, just skip and go to California as seemed to be the plan for 46, or try something new?

With all respect to Randy, want to steer this back to a previous idea...
If you could select a location, but it CANNOT be a top level track (Like indy, Sonoma, Charlotte, etc.), what location would you like to see a convention have a track day or two at?
Something along the lines of NJMP, Autobahn, etc. Something club oriented. affordable, near support facilities (hotel).
Speak up instead of grumbling, maybe your suggestion will be a possibility?
Nothing personal and not directed at anyone, but .....
It's time for the annual "Where should we have the next convention?" thread....one of my favorites (insert sarcasm font here)

Pocono always winds up great but what about Lime Rock? We could all rally outside Kopec's house.
I was hoping for Bridge Hampton. I miss the sand flees that were always there in the dunes. Unfortunately now it would need to be a golf tournament?

You might ask Howard Pardee why signing up for all three different run groups is not a good idea, especially with just one car.
So, 68GT350roadracer why did you feel compelled to report my suggestion to you to run more sessions? No one, including myself, would force you to track your car. Running extra sessions was even listed as an option within the previous SAAC event at Pitt Race by SAAC Admin. themselves. :)
What about Nashville Super Speedway ???
Not much happening there since they lost their truck date ........ somewhat central location, lots of infrastructure at a reasonable cost.

Rumor has it that the Cup series is going back there in the near future and even read that they are entertaining going back to the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. I went to a truck series race there in 1997 when I was living there and had a great time

Drove the track a year ago. Views are spectacular, but very little infrastructure. No big hotels nearby, but a cool track!
I enjoyed Sears Point/Sonoma last time around, lots to do, and the road racing and drag racing was fun. First time I drag raced, and I quickly learned the car and driver needed a lot of dialing in drag race wise. Get better soon Randy!

Back to Willow Springs. 2 tracks since we were last there. Lots of CS history. Put up a tent and have In-N-Out cater the dinner. No big hotels around but enough small ones. Or go to Buttonwillow where we've never been and use Bakersfield (35 minutes away) with a few big hotels.

The Glen would be amazing, still holding out that Indy will be rescheduled for later this year. FYI Cobra was to be the featured marque at the SVRA race at Indy, so SAAC's event would tie in perfectly.

Just my two cents :)
I would agree, especially if the bulk of the prep work was already in place prior to cancellation, would make Indy an obvious choice. But who knows ???

It is typically is hinged on the vintage racing group and where they are having their event so that we can reduce cost for the track. It hasn't been stand alone SAAC for some years now because of rising track costs etc. Our venerable chairmen of the board has a in with those guys to keep us in consideration . ;) They don't have to have us but we need them unless we want to have prohibitivly higher event fee's. At least that is my take on the situation . Someone update me if I am off base.
Bob, if you don't know or don't care to reveal, I fully understand.
My totally respectful question: Have recent SAAC conventions had enough entrants/spectators to cover the expenses?
I sincerely hope the club is making money on the events. My question is not based in anything but curiosity, and forward-looking thoughts about the future of club events.

Sorry,I am not privy to that info.
Big tracks cost big money. Lynn Park can get by for $200 per car at a Willow Springs weekend. There are far fewer cars taking to the track and even fewer (compared to past conventions) on display. Several reasons. Many own multiple cars now and would only bring one. Lots of people also own "new" models and prefer to take those on a trip. Reduced track participation mean costs spread over fewer participants so higher cost per car keeps some away. Moving each year does add to the cost. If they could make a 3 year deal with a hotel and track the prices would come down.
Big money indeed, while this article and data is old it does give an idea of what just track rental costs (corner works, Ambulance crew, Safety crew are extra) for a weekend. Personally I think it's wise to "piggy back" with a SVRA Vintage race venue to reduce costs for SAAC.
https://blog.motorsportreg.com/global-race-track-rental-fees#.X3JxKi2ZNKM
Track expenses are the big ticket item. I can correlate, as I have run, priced, and set up track days. Three days at a major facility is $50 - 75K plus with all the extras. If SAAC was to shrink down to a one-day event at a lesser track, such as NJMP, NOLA, Autobahn, Willow, or other club-style tracks, they could probably do so solo, but it requires a major re-think of the convention. And pricing.
The Bosses like a name track, and Bob did identify on who's coattails we ride. It is felt that we'll attract more going to a famous place.
Me personally, I don't care, as long as the track is fun. Why not just have a one-day track frenzy, and spend another day with the car shows at the host hotel location, and maybe other fun social things? Heck, I've been asking for years at the Jersey Shore, one day at NJMP, car show on the boardwalk the second day, and one day in the Pine Barrens hunting for Jimmy Hoffa or other Soprano's victims......

Mr Gaines you know after all these years, where the convention "should be" is directly proportional to how far the track is from a SAAC member's house.
Becoming a teenager during the sixties, I could only read about places like Willow Springs, Watkins Glen, and Road America. Through SAAC, I have been able to not only see Carroll Shelby and his cars on the tracks, but have been able drive on them myself. Some local members won't drive 100 miles to attend a convention, some of my most memorable trips were the ones that I had difficulties getting there.
My vote Charlotte or VIR...both great tracks!

Willow Springs, they have drag racing too.
Are any of the super tracks o conventions gone by, like Charlotte, California Speedway, etc., considering making deals with car clubs since they had few or no fans in the stands or even had races in 2021? I wonder if any are desperate enough to offer a nice venue at an affordable rate. 8)
At any big venue tracks.... highly doubtful. In fact SVRA has expanded their venues for 2021, whether they will be spectator attended is up in the air.
Cal Speedway is closed (at the moment) and considering a downsizing. 1/2 mile oval and 1/8th mile drag strip for less "footprint" . Trouble is the land is so polluted ( same as Irwindale) it won't be approved for anything else. There is a really good track in the bay area!
New Hampshire Motor Speedway? They only have one NASCAR Cup Series race now. Lots of lodging options in Tilton, Laconia and Concord. Beautiful part of the country, many things to see and do for folks that may want to make a week of it. Just a suggestion.
Found this track by mistake while doing some research for a future testing site.
Ticks off a lot of boxes, close to major city and major airport, has a 32000sq ft. events center on site. Has variable track configurations, plus a go kart and skid pad facility.
This could possibly be an option if SAAC were considering a solo event.

Hi Guys, just my $ 0.02 cents on the location search. (www.Thermal.cc) in Thermal California. Private racetracks/country club. Home of the BMW school of high performance driving. I have been there a few times taking the BMW classes on 5 different tracks on the property. Maybe one of the wealthy SAAC members can buy a house on the property and get us all in for a convention ? Sunny Southern California, surrounding Coachella Valley hotels, restaurants, entertainment, etc., and maybe hot enough in the summer to kill any Covid-19 germs ??? Mark
Just my thinking out loud: Would be wise for this year, ah 2021, that it might be wise to wait until at least July or August to hold SAAC 45 so that those who choose to vacinate might have that done by those months.
You can take California Speedway in Fontana out of any future plans as the 2 Mile oval and road course are being dumped for a 1/2 mile short track with the work starting next year. The value of the property is high and the extra will acreage will be sold for residential and commercial development. Kind of recalls Riverside Raceway loss.
Sad, as we had a couple of fun SAAC conventions at the Speedway. 8)

And 120 degrees in the shade between May and October.
Spring Valley in Parhump NV. Shelby American has used it as a test track. Another private/residential track. They also have a pistol range for the ultimate shootout.
My choice for west coast would be Sears. SCCA has also added some more track to Button Willow.
^^Agreed on Thermal.
Buttonwillow is a fun track, and novice drivers can't get in too much trouble. (Famous last words.)
The usual crappy roadside hotels and food are nearby. And the wives can go explore wonderful and oh-so-scenic city of Bakersfield.
Agreed in downsizing to a smaller venue with a fun track. I have always been a huge proponent in finding a good club track, such at the Autobahn in Chicago, and build a fun event around that.

I love the track time, one of the reasons I go. Personally I do not go because it is some Big Name track. I go for to see the Shelbys and the people and get track time. I think if it was at a smaller venue track, we could reduce cost or at least have more track time. Since we would not be sharing the track with the SVRA.

The Autobahn, is also known as the "Autobahn Country Club". A nice venue hardly 10 minutes off of I-80 south of Joliet IL. A couple of issues: I have no idea where the Host Hotel would be as there aren't any near the Autobahn Club. And, the club members are members so they can tour the track (there are 2 or 3 different configurations availble) , that is why they paid into the "Club".
But, I will say, it might be worth checking out.

It is my understanding that the purpose pf sharing with SVRA was to reduce cost which has been voice before by the board. I am not involved in that process but my impression is if it were easier and less costly all things considered to do a smaller track without having to share the venue it would already have been done. But that is just me. Others my know differently.
I think sharing the annual event with SVRA is the only way to go. You get a ton of cool cars in addition to the Shelby's and there is constantly action on the track.
