was that with open exhaust? we're using headers with pretty restrictive mufflers.

Stock Headers goin threw the exhaust on the dyno.

Are you guys taking numbers on an engine stand or at the rear wheels?

Steve

When my car was restored in 2011, the original engine was rebuilt by Cobra Automotive and dyno runs initiated. I have posted the run to "My Gallery". It was on a dyno stand using shop 1.75 headers, dual points [original style distributor & coil] and 93 octane gas. Timing was 36 and lash was .012 [whatever that means!!!].  Power was 310 hp @ 6200 - 6300 rpm.

I hope that helps!  All the best, Steve

Ok I will play... Lets leave out Cobra Automotive numbers, they are serious about making power ;) Lets think about your average machine shop down on the corner and talkin purely stock components. No upgrades- 250...260 HP!

I guess my numbers don't count! :'( Never mind.

Steve

For those who care: They used the original heads and parts with open headers for the run.  I'll not post anymore.

Your numbers do count here King, just Kurt and the boys are not your AVERAGE JOES. Local engine builders don't have the HP knowledge Cobra auto has. My answer was a thumbs up for you in engine builder choice...

   Steve ,
The comment was not pointed at you (IMHO) "I" believe the comment was made because Cobra Automotive  does a MUCH better job than the average person and got you those VERY good numbers out of a "stock" engine. I would not expect anything less from them as they go the extra mile to make it happen.
A while back , one of the magazines printed an article on a local ( So Cal) shop's customer rebuild of a '66 GT350 engine. I think they made 297 hp. SAI came up with  306 hp "in a different era" . The had 100+ octane LEADED gas and brand new parts . There are no notes or papers that exist on exactly how this number was determined that "I" know of.  That is a 35 hp increase over an "assembly line" 289 hi po .
You have an exceptional engine Steve!

   EdwardGT350,
I've played with these engines since the first came out. I'm sure SAI tested with open headers only back then . I don't see 300+ without them open , the heads limit the power severely. "If" we had the ability to assemble a complete NOS engine today , "I" feel it would produce LESS than 306 hp. "Blueprinting" and changing the ring package and a few other things "might" see over 306 as Cobra Automotive found for Steve.

Edward  -

No mods - stock heads and cam.  I believe that the motor was bored .010 over. (it was standard bore when started).  TOE performance built the motor -

Looks good, I would love to do that one day, peak at 307.9?
Cheers

Good number as well Dave. I am guessing TOE didn't use a 5/64 x 5/64 x 3/16 ring pack and substituting a thinner set of rings ( height wise) would lessen the ring drag and "free up" some power. That is the reason I said I doubt one built from all NOS parts would make 306 hp with today's fuel.

hey Randy -

Not sure on the rings - his notes were that he used "JE Pistons, Moly" for the rings, and...  JE Pistons 4.010 bore for the Pistons...

So - NOT all NOS parts internally...

You have good parts in there for sure. Factory production tollerences were not as tight as TOE uses and the assembly time took one tenth of the time TOE did to build it LOL!! We didn't have the quality parts back then like we do now.
