Another weird Cobra Manson connection:

Terry Melcher has been credited with helping to shape the sound of 1960s surf music in California......Melcher and Johnston also created another group, The Rip Chords, which had a top 10 hit with "Hey Little Cobra".

In 1968, Beach Boy Dennis Wilson introduced Melcher to ex-con and aspiring musician Charles Manson.

Manson met Melcher at 10050 Cielo Drive, the home that Melcher shared with his girlfriend, actress Candice Bergen, and musician Mark Lindsay.

Manson eventually auditioned for Melcher, but Melcher declined to sign him. There was still talk of a documentary being made about Manson's music, but Melcher abandoned the project after witnessing Manson fighting with a drunken stuntman at Spahn Ranch. Wilson and Melcher severed their ties with Manson, a move that angered Manson. (Beach Boys Mike Love wrote years later - Terry, Doris Day's only child, was extremely close to his mom. He had told her about Manson – and about some of his scary antics, his brandishing of knives, his zombie followers – and that Manson had been to the house on Cielo and she insisted he move out) Soon after, Melcher and Bergen moved out of the Cielo Drive home. The house's owner, Rudi Altobelli, then leased it to film director Roman Polanski and his wife, actress Sharon Tate.

On August 8–9, 1969, the house was the site of the murders of Tate ...Jay Sebring....by members of Manson's "family". Some authors and law enforcement personnel have theorized that the Cielo Drive house was targeted by Manson as revenge for Melcher's rejection and that Manson was unaware that he and Bergen had moved out.

Quote from: deathsled on May 31, 2024, 11:49:30 PMIt is a melt down for entirely different reasons.  I woke up this morning spewing a vile diatribe of filth coming from my mouth, a holdover since late Thursday afternoon.

Where are the like and +1 buttons?

I'd go back to points. Slap the original dual point back in it. Get your condenser at NAPA - Echlin ones are said to be US made. Avoid the cheap ChiCom ones or you will be sitting by the side of the road. If you drive it 500 miles a month you only need to lift the cap once a year to check the gap. If you go that route make sure the dist and cam gear are compatible.
I've got a couple Mallory dual points lying around. One is a vintage crab cap that I bought because they fit so nice under the Monte Carlo bar. The other is a later billet one. If you go that route find the points with the X in the part number. They have stiffer springs for higher rpm work.
I've used Pertronix for years without a problem. They are less than 2 miles from my house and until they were bought out by corporate America you could walk in and get answers or buy stuff cheap. They had many problems when they first started using imported components but those days are said to be behind them.
They are very critical on getting the right voltage so make sure all your terminals - even all the grounds - are clean.
My Model A came with a Pertronix when/if it dies I've got a freshly rebuilt stock distributor in the trunk to slap in. I've even pre-installed it to test and time. BTW I also found a very rare 1929 Mallory dual point centrifugal advance distributor I'm restoring for my hot rod Model B street banger engine.

Quote from: Don Johnston on April 13, 2024, 03:20:08 AMMaybe we can get bits of the building as souvenirs for a nominal fee (or is it phenominal?).  I had not seen this closing posted elsewhere.  So where are OVC, Shelby Licensing, THe Foundation, Shelby Enterprises and the Team Shelby folks going?  8)

OVC barely made their deadline to be out on 5-22. They moved to Huntington Beach near Foose's. The Foundation will become work from home. Licensing/Enterprises was in reality run out of the attorney's office. I think TS has been in LV for awhile. As far as souvenirs the building is getting an entire new roof - there should be plenty of stuff. I imagine the new owners will be reconfiguring the interior so get there early and see if you can get some of the OVC wall with signatures or the Camilo Pardo murals.

Still one of my favorite photos of the place. OVC was assembling cars for Milbank. One of their customers came to test his new car and promptly put it over the center divider and onto its roof.

The Lounge / Vacation Driving Tips

As the summer vacation season approaches we should add special instructions to help visitors better navigate when they are in your area.
A few basic California points are when you ask how far someplace is you will get an answer in hours and minutes not miles. The answer will usually be based on the current time so if you ask at 8 pm you can expect the answer to double or triple at 8 am. The fast lane isn't. You can be in Los Angeles and still be over 3 hours from your destination - in Los Angeles.

Does anyone think SA would need more than 10-20 visitor badges?

It would be perfect with gold lettering........

RE: The Cuba GP photo you could take that same shot today and minus the race cars the rest would still be the same

In truth 1969 sales fell flat because this optional hood ornament was deleted from the accessory list..........

Larry Zane could have used her. When he restored 5R001 he said he spent a lot of money getting the hood straight. Afterwards he noted that it was bowed in every photo and was probably left (or made) that way to vent high pressure air out of the engine compartment.

COCOA drove up as a group from SoCal Lynn Park, Tom McIntire in Cobras. Tony Fasola in his 65 with Dan McGuire and I rode along with Mark Behne in his 68 GT350 - 843 was our only car at the time (Camaro was down for new engine) so it was left at home for the wife. It rained on the way and we sat under an underpass for awhile. When it didn't let up the topless Cobras decided to just drive fast enough so the rain went over them. Jim Wallace had left earlier with Mike Shoen's Coupe - he had picked it up at Petersen's orig museum on Hollywood Blvd. We commented on the POS trailer but it turned out that had been a SA vehicle too. 4 of us got a motel room across the street. Typical frat stuff - pull the mattress' off the bed and you end up with 4 instead of 2. Some guys came up from COCOA just for the swap meet they arrived about 1 am and crowded into our room. There were 8 total. Nobody got any sleep the BS session ended at 6am when we were out walking the parking lot again.
Jack's car was just a shell on the trailer. I heard that he sold it in the same condition many years later.
Duane Bowers had just gotten his 427 back from it's staring roll in Gumball Rally. He had them paint it black and was POed when someone leaned on the body by the rollbar and left a dent. They did fix the dent in the nose from when the Ferrari mirror hit it. His car fared much better in filming. Les Linley's is the one they used in the wash and it sustained frame damage when they slid it into the channel. It was near the end of filming and the stunt driver didn't get fired - unlike the one who stuffed the Ferrari into the front of the semi trailer when he pulled up the ramp. He forget 50+ mph on the road translates into 50+ mph on the ramps with little room to stop. They reshot it at a lower speed.
The 1936(?)Cammer Coupe had a price tag of 10 grand and included 10 more 427 wheels that were in the bed of the truck. It finally got rebuilt as the 427 Cobra it started line as.
