Stay tuned for our next adventure going to install a 1965 filtered fuel pump. Put that button top away.

Again the net has found a new Carter filtered 289 fuel pump for just $28.79

Compare that to other new or rebuilt fuel pumps costing much more than this.

Good afternoon fellow SAACkers and owners of the "real ones" in this case a true bonafide 19 and 66 GT350H car.

As promised we are turning back to the year 1965 and installing a fuel pump with an attached fuel filter.

Yes we know its not correct but it sure will be more efficient in the filtering department.

Parts used :

Carter fuel pump M4009
comes with fuel pump - gasket - needed brass fitting adapter
Cost +/- $29

Repro fuel canister with FoMoCo script
+/- $20

New fuel line - make sure you get the one for E10-15 fuels.  About $5

You will thank me later

Start by putting a pan underneath the fuel pump to catch the fuel that will drop once you release the fuel line and then F. P.

Unbolt first the fuel line
then the F. P. bolts

Clean all surfaces

One thing that EVERYONE told me I had to replace was the fuel line.

I did not, as the F. P. brought a brass fitting adapter.

Again unbolt the fuel line on both ends first.

Then when reattaching,  slightly bend the fuel line on the fuel pump side with a fuel line tool/ bender thingy.

Use teflon tape on all attachments points to prevent leaks.

When reattaching the F. P.  on the motor, then attach the fuel line to the F. P., then to the carb

Now with the car up, slide underneath and replace all the original fuel (oh nooooo it no longer has the original FoMoCo rubber hose - no concourse award for you) line

Start car and see if its has any leaks.

If none, proceed to drive and enjoy your GT350H

I personally drove to one of our local seven an eleven gourmet (lol) stores.

I proceeded to consume a gigantor cherry coke slurpeeeeeee !

And observed the patrons of this sites comments:

Naaaa its not real, if it was it would not be here

I use-ta own one just like that, but it was yellar

I would drive this everywhere

I think it's worth about $35k more or less

Don't have AC

Why would someone drive it in the rain

Oh my god it's so kool

I think they brought a big block, maybe a thee-fiddy

He left it open with the windows down

Until next time hasta la vista, enjoy the ride cause that's all you got !

Even if we had the original button top, we would have taken it off, placed it on a shelf for the next caretaker to decide its fate.

To us changing the old non original pump on our 1966 Hertz cult car to the better filtering fuel pump of the 1965 hi performance 289 is a much needed improvement

After replacing the Fueling Pump

I decided to replaced the thermostat with a brass marine 143 degree thermostat.

If you have never attempted before, it's a technical and arduous process.

Remove upper hose at the thermostat
Remove two bolts
Clean surfaces and install new gasket
To be precise ALWAYS use a micrometer
Install thermostat correctly
install two bolts
And torque to just enough
Reinstall upper hose to thermostat
Wala....you are done

143 degrees is the bestes temperature to cruise around Floridaland.

Now that's kool daddy !

Photos of the fuel purchased items, the thermostat did not sign the filming waiver

Thus no picture of said 143 thermostat

Your write up is timely FL SAAC. Thanks. I have had the same pump in the box for 3 months on my garage floor ready to go on my '66 tribute. In my case I want what's going to provide the best performance and heard this 65 style pump is a much better design and flows better than the '66 style.

A couple of questions. Did you have to adjust the float bowls in the carb after fitting the pump?

Was any form of sealant required on the gasket?

Good morning

First and foremost we are not mechanics nor do we play one on any TV series

Really don't think you have to readjust the floats, but we did adjust them anyways.

The only thing we used was thick grease, in our case we used a light smear of wheel bearing grease on both sides of the gasket

Just to hold the gasket in place so it wouldn't slip and slide.

In the future should you want to remove he fuel pump you dont gave to spend 12 hours scraping the block clean or fight to take the pump off.

Like we did because the previous Mortimer had an endless supply of that 3M black glue and applied to BOTH sides

Yes BOTH sides

Wishing you the best of luck on your project

Yes indeed my good man

Let me tell you, don't know if the old pump ( that looked brand new ) was going bad or maybe the old fuel hoses were collapsing.

But with the new pump it starts like our newer fuel injected cars, not even using the choke.

I think this new 1965 style fuel pump maybe pumping more efficiently than the other.

To be continued....

Continuation of the Hertz Legends

Aloha !

When we acquired our 1966 Shelby last year, the coconut telegraph went wild.

Had one specific call from a friend who at one time owned another 1966 automatic  Shelby and had converted it to a stick as he wanted to row, row his boat at the time.

Then life "happened" marriage,  house, children guess what got sold?

the S H E L B Y that was never going to be For Sale

It traveled north with it's new owner into a different state.

Oh that anemic C4 transmission who wants that ?

So it laid there for years being an eye sore, collecting dust did we mention a tripping hazzard

So it laid in a dark corner of the garage (sung like hotel California - Eagles)

cool wind in my hair

Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air

Up ahead in the distance

I saw a shimmering light (it's my wife)

My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim

I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway (told you it's the wife)

I heard the mission bell

And I was thinking to myself

This could be heaven or this could be Hell

Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way sell that tranny (the wife)

There were voices down the corridor (wife)

I thought I heard them say sell that tranny

So guess who just got the hi-po transmission.....ME or better said the Musketeer!

And guess where one of the Three Musketeers is spending its week vacation ?

Some say Hotel California.....not

It is spending an all expense and all inclusive week at the "Le TransMeSion Spa and Resort" located in the beautiful hills of Opalocka Carol City.

You have heard "Pennies from Heaven" well this is "Transmission from Heaven"

better lucky than good

Truly blessed, wishing everyone a fantastic weekend !

Oh the pretty little red car is just that a pretty little red car
