Title: For you '65 GT350 sleuths...
Post by: SFM5S159 on February 09, 2018, 02:52:19 PM
Here are pics of a hood I recently acquired (A craigslist find!).  It came from Washington State, where it was supposedly removed from a '65 that had been raced in that area, 30+ years ago.

Does anyone recognize the numbering on the hood?  On the underside there seems to me valve adjustment info and timing info possibly?

My assumption is that this is indeed and original hood.  It needs some repair but is generally in good condition.

For bonus points can anyone identify in the first pic what the hood is leaning against??
Hint:  It's specifically for a European vehicle.

We discussed this hood a year or so ago when it was on Craigslist.  I think some local WASAAC guys inspected in person too.  I'm sure they will respond soon.

I don't know anything about the hood but what its leaning against looks like a contraption that holds removable hardtops that came on many
European cars.

It's a roof rack off of my 23 window VW bus...   ;D ;D

Does anyone recognize the hood?   Is this an early...mid or late production unit?

Thanks,
Mike

If original, I think it's the later version of the porthole hood.

I say so because of the rib on the underside of the hood, along the centerline, in front of the hood scoop opening. I'm no expert but I think it's presence distinguishes it from the earlier version.

I also think the repoductions of the porthole hood, which are excellent and to me indistinguishable from an original, also have that added rib.

Is that another hood against the wall by the luggage rack?

Yes, complete with battle scars from an incident at Mid-Ohio during an SVRA vintage race... :-[

I looked into this hood 2 years ago when it first appeared on the Seattle Craigslist. Seller sent me a bunch of photos but I lost interest as I couldn't be certain it was an original. According to the seller it was from "car #22", I wasn't able to verify if he meant from 5022 or what. Ended up posting the info here back then...

Glad to see it has found a home.

The seller was a bit eccentric (aren't we all?)... Wasn't a Shelby or even a Ford guy.  He claimed the local lore/legend was that the hood was off an R model that was raced in the northwest.
He was convinced the marking on the hood was related to the VIN.  Looks like valve lash and maybe timing info to me...So it may have come from a car that was raced?
Finding an old photo with that #22 would be a possible way to identify some history on the hood.

Jim:  You didn't call me back about my '67 GT500!  lol

That's right. Even most of the hoods from the second batch of cars (5S162 included) did not have that "rib".

My thoughts as well, the owner also told me he thought it was from R Model...

It would be nice to see photos of the underside of the three different(more if there are more than 3)versions of the porthole hood.

I remember seeing some on old site. I can provide pics of the no rib version. I'll take some tomorrow and try to upload. Paul.

Greetings .I have read this post. And it dawned on me I may have the answer. ..I bought this car and was from the Portland area and vintage raced from the history. I gather.  80s thru 90s.  Ran under the number of 24.  Is this a possible link...I will scan some pic and we can keep. The post interesting

Many years ago, in the Shelby American/Marque, there was an article
about photography and the object was a 65 GT350 and if I remember correctly
it was car #22. It had a hood painted white on the under side and it had the
extra rib Paul is talking about.
