Can anyone help me diagnose a grinding noise in the rear end of my 68 GT500? The grinding is associated with both left and right turns and can be felt in the car. No noise is heard or felt in a straight line. Any help would be great.
I would first check the fluid level. Then the quality of the lube in there.
If you have a locking device in there such as a Detroit Locker or even a Traction lock it's highly likely that there is an issue with it.
You may bein need of a rebuild.
It could also be your bevel/spider gears in the differential/ trac loc.

You need to pull the diff and have it looked at. As noted in the first two responses , there is an issue that will not fix itself and continued use could cause more damage .

Smart thing paying attention to l & r turns and noise being equal.
That trick works on front wheel drive cars real well, and rear wheel.
Sharp zig zag while driving, isolates noise of which bearing is bad in the wheels.
Sound changes while zig zagging.
So, does it make more noise under acceleration?
Or does it make a different noise under de- acceleration?
If it changes, then the issue may be the ring and pinion?
Worth checking, cause its easy.

Probably not a bearing "YET" . It could be the cover of the traction lock (if equipped). No noise when not turning , bad noises when turning in either directions. You need to pull it before it self destructs while trying to figure it out it's broken.

Exactly. Much less expensive to replace the clutch pack than a carrier!
Probably not your issue, but here is what I just had.
Had my whole rear axle sent out and went through with lots of work done. It had been making a noise before and still made the noise after. Very annoying vibration over 60mph or so.
After lots of head scratching and calling the rebuilder who was supporting me for a conclusion.....we found.....that a 67 rear flexi brake hose was installed and the part that connects to the axle tube was touching the axle shaft itself!!
A DOH moment it was.

Did this just start or did you just get the car and it has this issue?
Does this also happen in reverse?
If also in reverse and you just got the car I would say someone put a Detroit L in it.

Pete: Some of the simplest things can drive one to a point of incredible frustration, often staring you right in the face! I don't make a habit of throwing tools but there have been a couple of those moments.

Guessing is just that. LOTS of well meaning guesses here but NOTHING can be done while it is in the car. Bite the bullet and pull it. It will not fix itself. Sheesh! "I see" a broken traction lock cover when I hold my hand up to the computer. I could be wrong and it's the spider gears that are bad. One or the other.

Have you tried adding ( friction modifier ) may solve your problem.

If the noise doesn't go away on its own, you may have to jack up the rear of the car and pull the '63 Corvette out, that you ran over, manually. Sometimes its a 50/50 chance that they loosen up and fly out into the ditch on their own...... 8)

Randy- I think most on here understand your mechanical abilities and your willingness to help. A few want to wander aimlessly thru the woods without any direction. Instead of just taking positive help from people that know and understand certain things, whether it be a virus, or a 3rd member that needs some help, some should just heed the advise and would probably already on their way to a better situation.
Thank you for the kind words. I was factory trained in 1968 to do Ford differentials and unless I tell people that , there is little chance of them knowing. I've fixed hundreds of broken traction lock cases , spun bearings on early Detroit Lockers in that time and when the OP said what the symptoms were , I "offered up". Boy do I miss the popcorn emoji! :)

As for the Virus: Stay home. You can wander out when they drop. Then again, I would venture 70% here are in the age that is most threatened, not worse than the H1N1. No, I am not minimizing it. However, I don't exist in a panic. I do what I can.
The only thing I stocked up on is Hirtenberger high-pressure 9MM for my MP5 SD. The "natives" tend to act up when they can exploit situations and riot. I was on the job in '92 when that went down. I'll pass on being a victim.
Well, I am now in the same boat as you, My 66 GT350 mentioned above still has the horrid vibration and noise over 60mph, Had a pretty thorough rear end rebuild about 200 miles ago. New Ring and Pinion, new limited slip. Axle bearings, axle seals. Looks like its going back to the builder for a look see.

Well.......pinion angle was my issue.
Unfortunately it cost me plenty to find that out but thats car. Expensive haul either way to the specialist
So I am probably going to pull the T5 and put in a Toploader (the original T10 is on the shelf)
I would love to improve the pinion angle but the tail of the T5 needs to go up and there is no room for it to go up on my car. Bit of a bummer.

I'm not sure I would trust your specialist. Thousands of people have done the T5 swap without issue. If you take a measurement from the trans mount to the center of the output shaft, I doubt it's much different.
Are you sure your driveshaft is the correct length? If the yoke is too far in, or not far enough, that will cause problems.
Hello, Specialist is "the guy" for axles. Huge name over here
He did say my driveshaft may be a touch short
They pulled the shafts and diff and went over it all and it was "as new"
I will admit I questioned their findings as have had 6 or 8 T5 cars without this issue and mine is an unmolested car so should work as well as any other
Peter- Can you post the a picture of the trans mount and cross member?
