Thanks Bob and 67GT500.

We did adjust the steering box, it took a little of the slop out but had no real effect on the sticky feel. 67.....I have the same feel at low speeds as at highway.

My preference is for original parts......I see Jim Cowles sells rebuilt original boxes....one of the guys on the rally has a Flaming River box and swears by it, the entire unit is new.

I'm on a GT350 tour in VT enjoying the spectacular fall colours but have an issue with my car

The power steering feels:
stiff (harder than normal to operate)
sticky (sort of locks in any position, then moves when asked but with a sticky feel)
falls off centre (when making any turn...especially at highway speeds....it feels like it falls off centre and then makes the turn....much more abrupt than normal)
The car is much more nervous to drive. It has radial tires so it's not the F60-15 bias ply grabbing every groove in the road.

Fluid level is fine

Is this:
pump?
ram?
steering box?
or all of the above.....I can't imagine all three would fail at the same time
It feels to me like the ram or steering box

He was one of a kind.

Tenacious, passionate, resourceful, knowledgeable and unique.

I learned a lot from Steven..........when I first met him, he sold me a 900 mile Hemi Cuda and I wondered why anyone would sell such a great car. He explained that he had just secured a cutaway display Hemi engine and one of the Billboard posters and had no need for the car anymore......I just didn't get it but Steven was way ahead of the curve.

It was a chance encounter with Ed Meyer that changed his life. Special Ed mentored Steven on the rights and wrongs in the parts and automobilia world. It all started with a Mopar clock.


Years later when he set up the building in CA I helped out for a few days......it was a collectors dream. The building was a blank slate. We mocked up each entire wall on the floor before putting it up for final installation. I would tell him that we had an 18" x 40" or 36" x 24" space and he would come out with another sign or poster to fill the space. I still have scabs on my knees from that week. He must have bought 5 miles of Velcro to put it all together.

The best sign I've EVER seen was at the Grand opening of the collection. He had one of those signs with interchangeable black letters. It simply said "Ed Meyer ruined my life". One of the displays has an unused pad of tickets for a sweepstakes draw. Someone actually filled one out and asked were to put it........Steven simply smiled.

When he was diagnosed it was a sad day........sometime later he mentioned that everyone he had been in treatment with had passed away. Then he called and was simply over the moon. His doctor told him that he had an experimental chemo and asked Steven if he would be the first patient. Steven asked what it was and the doc simply said he called it "GTX".......Steven being a devout Mopar fan just about lost it. Doc.....put it in me now!!!!

Truth is stranger than fiction sometimes......Steven wrote a novel in his lifetime.

I think to many people fall into the trap that value - restoration costs equals current market value.

Shelbys do not follow that rule.

Seldomly do you see cars under $50,000, when you do they usually have some major issues, like being burnt or the numbers stripped off them.

So, now we need to refocus the thread to how much can be replaced before its not the original car? That should get things going.....

I live in an area where rust is common. Many times I see cars that have been restored and the owner thinks they have an original car but when you ask the owner has replaced
floors
rockers
torque boxes
trunk floor drop offs
tail light panel
outer wheel houses
quarter panels
doors
fenders
passenger engine bay apron (battery rust)
four common rust holes on aprons beside shock towers

I think to myself.......there is no way that car has proper structural integrity. There is so much engineering that goes into the manufacturing process with crumple zones in the metal....the amount of spot welds that would hold areas together, etc.
If you took all of the panels off the car that were replaced I don't know how a car can't be called a rebody. The content of replaced panels exceeds what is original.
One thing is for sure......I wouldn't want to be involved in an accident in one of these cars.

But when a car is a Shelby guys simply don't want to let go of the car. They will buy something affordable and attempt to ressurect the car on a budget. It could also be argued that it would be cheaper to restore a Shelby than a four door Maverick. You can buy a multitude of reproduction parts for a Shelby, Maverick parts are hard to find, new or used.

When does a car cease to exist?

There are two Ford GT's from a local collector Rob Blair coming up at Mecum in Indy. Rob's cars have lower mileage than the ebay car.

doing a conversion next week on my 65

have one in a 69 GT500, 2100 rpm at 70 mph, comes out of the hole like it has 4:11's . The 428 has ample torque to pull the car, rarely does one have to downshift on the freeway
you can actually have a conversation on the freeway, the noise level drops significantly and you don't have to go see you dentist and get your fillings checked after a long drive

I've managed to get a set of originals for spares as we started putting some miles on our car.

I was quite relieved when these came out and grabbed a set and don't have to risk the originals outside of shows.

Are you going to make them in a wider version?
