SAAC-32 AFTER-ACTION REPORT

SAAC's 32 annual national convention is now history. About 2500 people found their way to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT - about a 40-minute drive from Salt Lake City. The headquarters hotel was The Little America Hotel and Towers and it was, by far, the best hotel facility we've ever used for a SAAC convention.

Ok, the weather was hot: over 100° most days, but as everyone was fond of saying, it was a dry heat. Almost no humidity and there was a slight breeze in the shade so nobody sweated very much.

The track, itself, was brand new and state-of-the art. It consisted of two small tracks, east and west, with connectors that, when used, connected them to provide over 4 miles. We chose to use only one side - 2.25 miles - because the long track would only allow two or three laps in a 15-minute open track session. That wasn't enough to learn the track. At the same time the open track was taking place, the other track was being used for instructor laps (MMP has a pack of white and blue striped school Mustangs that were specially prepared by Ford Racing) and parade laps for anyone attending the convention. Everyone could be a participant as opposed to a spectator.

Mixed into the open track schedule were practice sessions for two separate race groups. Vintage was for Cobras, Shelbys, GT40s and Trans-Am cars and about 30 cars were entered. The race on Saturday afternoon was a real nail-biter. The Mustang race took place on Sunday afternoon. Eight race cars, from 1965 through 1990, took the green flag. The winner wasn't a surprise: a Roush-built Trans-Am Mustang.

As soon as you got into the paddock you were met with displays from Ford Racing, Shelby Automobiles and the Larry Miller Collection which was made up of a dozen competition Cobras and GT40s. Some street GT350s and more Cobras were also scattered about, with a replica of the Cobra Caravan trailer as a backdrop.

The evening programs were highlighted by some of the names that put Shelby American on the map. Peter Brock, Bob Bondurant, Lew Spencer and Chuck Cantwell all shared some of their memories of the good old days, which seemed not to be that far in the past with cars in every direction you looked.

We'll have a full report with plenty of photos in the next issue of the Shelby American.
