October 2006
WHAT DO WE DO FOR AN ENCORE?

YOU WON’T BELIEVE MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK! For a look at the track just go to www.millermotorsportspark.com/

VIR was a treat. Nobody walked away unhappy, and the biggest question everyone had was, “How can you top this?” Well, we found a way. We’re bringing the SAAC Show to Utah and it’s going to be worth the trip, no matter where you come from. Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele features the longest road course in North America – 4.5 miles. Everything is state of the art – and brand spanking new. The track is about 30 minutes from Salt Lake City and that’s where we’ll be staying.

2 CONVENTIONS ON ONE WEEKEND

SAAC-32 will have a few different things going on. For starters, this year’s convention will dovetail with a national convention for the SVT (Special Vehicles Team) Owners Association. Members of this organization will be bringing Mustang SVT Cobras, SVT Lightning pick-ups, SVT Focus’ and just about any other Ford performance car you can name. We’re also expecting to see a bunch of new GT500s and it wouldn’t surprise us if some ‘06 Hertz cars began to show up in private hands.

OPEN TRACK 3 DAYS >> (click here for open track document) <<

We’ve scheduled enough track time for everyone. You’ll run out of tires long before you run out of track time. MMP has several configurations and we’ll be using two of them at the same time. The 2.25-mile East Course will be the scene of the open track sessions as well as the two race group sessions.

2 RACES

Yes, we said two. Race Group 1 will be comprised of vintage race Cobras, GT40s, GT350s and Mustang Trans-Am cars . They will get 7 practice sessions on Friday and Saturday, and a 10-lap race on Saturday afternoon. The Race Group 2 will be for competition Mustangs from 1984 to the present. This race group will have 6 practice sessions on Saturday and Sunday and a 10-lap race on Sunday afternoon. All drivers must have valid competition licenses issued by recognized sanctioning bodies. All cars in the vintage race must appear period correct and must conform to the technical requirements of the group they last ran with. Late model Mustangs must conform to the technical requirements of the sanctioning body they last raced with. SCCA procedures and protocols will be adhered to in both race groups.

3 CAR SHOWS

SAAC-31 was a test bed for a new concept in car shows and it was much more successful that even we predicted. So they will be back. The Judged Concours will showcase the crème of the crème – the absolute pinnacle of Shelbys, Cobras, Bosses and Competition Cars restored to perfection. This will take place on Saturday. Also on Saturday will be the other two car shows: Hi-Performance Motors, for Cobras, Shelbys and Boss Mustangs presented as they might have appeared on a Shelby dealer’s lot when they were new. All other cars will be eligible for the Shine ‘N Show. In both shows a team of judges will select cars deserving of special recognition awards in about a dozen classes. All cars parked on the show field with receive a SAAC-32 commemorative medallion. Similar shows will be held on Sunday for SVT vehicles.

PARADE LAPS ALL 4 DAYS

The parade laps at SAAC-31 were also very well received, so we’ll continue that again this year. But we won’t be crowding everyone into one lunchtime session. We’ll be using the 2.2-mile West Course and the parade laps will run concurrently with the open track. As last year, speeds will be strictly limited to 55 MPH and passengers will be allowed. There will be a modest charge of $10 per car (payable as you go out on the track) and everyone will get 5 laps. Parade laps will be scheduled twice a day, each day.

INSTRUCTOR LAPS ALL 4 DAYS

What’s it like to lap the track in a new racing Mustang with a professional driver behind the wheel? You can find out. Miller Motorsports Park has a bunch of specially modified ‘06 Mustangs that have been heavily breathed on by Ford Racing. Between the parade lap sessions on the West Course, MMP’s instructors will be giving hot laps ($50 for three laps). It’s the ultimate E-ticket ride.

DRIVING SCHOOL ON MONDAY

We’re putting together a driving school (using your car or the track’s ‘07 Mustangs prepared by Ford Racing) which will run on Monday. Details have not yet been finalized but if you want to lean from a pro how to drive like a pro, this is for you.

FRIDAY NIGHT SEMINARS

After a full day at the track on Friday, grab a quick dinner and then head to the main ballroom back at the hotel to catch some historical and technical seminars. SAAC’s registrars will be on hand and we’ll round up some of the hobby’s most experienced experts. They’ll all be there to answer your questions and tell you some things you never knew.

January 2007 Update

WE’VE VISITED MILLER MOTORSPORT PARK

When you hear someone say “state-of-the-art,” this is the track they are talking about. Everything is brand new and absolutely First Class. We’re going to be spoiled wherever else we go from here on out. There is plenty of room and everyone at the track could not be more helpful. We are so looking forward to this convention!

WE’VE EXPANDED IT TO 4 FULL DAYS

We’ve gotten an excellent response from the SVT Owners Association. So much so, in fact, that we needed to add a fourth day of open track because we’re afraid SAAC members will grab most of the spots. You’ll be able to run any of the four mornings or afternoons but we expect most SAAC members to gravitate towards the first three days and SVTOA members to run the last three days. Those are the plans we’re making,  but we may just be surprised. We’re also expecting to see a whole lot of new ‘07 GT500s burning up the track. Look for some special activity for those cars and owners.

COBRA DAYTONA COUPE REUNION

One of our goals is to have all 6 Daytona Coupes together at this convention. We already have commitments from three of the owners and we will have the resources to get the one in Japan and the one in Switzerland shipped over for this event. We obviously can’t make any promises but we have high hopes. Then we’ll put an original driver in each car for a few exhibition laps. Imagine THAT for a photo opportunity

3 DAYS OF OPEN TRACK

We don’t want to hear anybody whining about “not enough track time.” If four days isn’t enough you need to get a night job driving a taxi cab. We’ll be using the 2.25-mile East Course for all open track sessions and the two race groups.

CELEBRITY RACE

MMP has about 30 ‘06 Mustangs modified by Ford Racing. They’re outfitted with roll cages and upgraded everything else, and we’re going to invite a bunch of celebrities to get behind the wheel and turn them loose. Just who will be on that invite list?  Use your imagination!

2 SEPARATE RACES

Yes, 2 races. One for vintage Cobras, Shelbys and GT40s. And don’t be surprised to see some Corvettes and Camaros join in. It’s going to look like the 1960s all over again. Late model Mustangs will fill the second grid: 1972 through 1996 cars are eligible. Can you say Roush Trans-Am Mustang?

3 CAR SHOWS

SAAC-31 was a test bed for a new concept in car shows and it was much more successful that even we predicted. So they will be back. All cars parked on the show field with receive a SAAC-32 commemorative medallion. The  Show ‘N Shine will be held on Sunday for SVT vehicles.

 PARADE LAPS ALL 4 DAYS

The parade laps last year were also very well received, so we’ll continue them again this year. But we won’t try to  squeeze everyone into one lunchtime session. We’ll be using the 2.2-mile West Course. The parade laps will run concurrently with the open track. Like last year, speeds will be strictly limited to 55 MPH. Passengers are encouraged. There will be a modest charge of $10 per car (payable as you go out on the track) and everyone will get 5 laps. Parade laps will be scheduled, morning and afternoon, all 4 days.

INSTRUCTOR LAPS ALL 4 DAYS

What’s it like to lap the track in a new racing Mustang with a professional driver behind the wheel? You can find out. Miller Motorsports Park has a bunch of specially modified ‘06 Mustangs that have been heavily massaged by Ford Racing. Between the parade lap sessions on the West Course, MMP’s instructors will be giving hot laps ($50 for three laps). It’s the ultimate E-ticket ride.

 SHELBY EMPLOYEE REUNION

We’ll need drivers for those Daytona Coupes. We’re also inviting the rest of the team. It will be a typical reunion and your chance to meet the guys who made it all happen.

HEADQUARTERS HOTEL:    LITTLE AMERICA HOTEL & TOWERS - SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

Salt Lake City has the perfect headquarters hotel for SAAC-32. The Little America Hotel is a four-star facility that has 850 rooms. It’s been a long time since we’ve all been able to stay in the same hotel. There are three levels of rooms: Court Side ($99 a night); Garden Rooms ($129 a night) and Tower Rooms ($149 a night). The ballroom seats 1200 people so nobody will get shut out of the dinner and evening program. Flying in? The hotel has a free shuttle to and from Salt Lake City International Airport (about 10 minutes away). Want to go shopping downtown? A free tram will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the malls and shops six blocks away. The track is about a half hour’s drive. And there will be secured parking a half a block from the hotel. It is fenced and gated and security guards will be on duty between 7 pm and 7 am, Thursday through Sunday. There will also be security out at the track every night between 6:30 pm and 8:30 am.

ROOM RESERVATIONS - 800-437-5288

One night’s deposit is required, refundable until one month prior to the event. Tell them you are with the SAAC to get SAAC’s special convention rate quoted above.

REGISTRATION FEES ARE PER PERSON/PER DAY. Everyone 16 years or older must pay the registration fee - either in advance or when you arrive. There is no charge for children 15 and under.

REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION. After we receive your registration we will send you an acknowledgement by regular mail or email. An actual confirmation letter, event schedule, map to the hotel and track and car show information will come along after the first of the year. Also included will be open track information, in the event that you later decide you would like to participate.

MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK OPEN TRACK spots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to SAAC National members or SVTOA members with Ford-powered cars only (exception: Shelby Series 1s). If you would like to run your car but are not a member you will have to join one club or the other. No exceptions. We are expecting the open track spots to all be filled by convention time so if you are serious about running you should register in advance (a word to the wise). Open track entry fee is $100 per car for each half day (2 fifteen-minute sessions on the track). Two drivers may share a car (entry fee is based on the car — not the number drivers; second driver need not be a club member). All drivers must attend the 9 a.m. Drivers Meeting prior to going out on the track that day and all cars must pass a safety inspection. The open track is NOT a competitive event. Please understand that. You are NOT racing. There may be a few spots available on the morning of the event due to last minute cancellations, and if so they will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis at Tech Inspection. We cannot guarantee that any spots will be available at that time so we strongly recommend registering in advance. When you do this you will receive advanced information which will help you to understand how the event is run and exactly what will be expected of you when you arrive with your car at Tech Inspection. You may run your car as hard (or as easy) as you feel comfortable doing. We run rain or shine; there will be no refunds in the event of less than perfect weather. We will be using Miller Motorsports Park’s East Course - 15 turns over 2.24 miles. Leaded race gas will be available at the track at all times, all three days. The pumps use credit cards – there is no attendant.

WHEEL-TO-RACING will be held on Saturday and Sunday. There will be two separate race groups. The vintage race on Saturday is for Cobras, GT40s, GT350s, Ford-powered A/Sedan and Trans-Am cars.  The race on Sunday is for late model and current Mustang race cars. Registration and entry for this event is separate from the open track. Vintage race practice on Friday and Saturday will consist of seven 15-minute sessions AM and PM, and a 10 lap race on Saturday afternoon. Late Model race practice on Saturday and Sunday will consist of six 15-minute practice sessions and a 10-lap race on Sunday afternoon. Drivers must have a current competition license issued by a recognized sanctioning body and cars must appear-period correct and pass a typical race safety inspection. Detailed race information and entry form is available for the asking. Entry is $300 and this includes 2 three-day convention registrations.

PARADE LAPS. We will be using the West Course (2.2 miles) for parade laps, twice a day for all three days. For $10 you’ll get 5 laps. Speeds will be held to 55 MPH. Passengers will be allowed and helmets will not be required. Parade lap fee will be payable when you go out on the track (no pre-registration).

INSTRUCTOR LAPS. Miller Motorsports Park has a team of instructors and a batch opf ‘06 Mustang GTs which have been muscled-up and tweaked for their driving school. We’ve scheduled some of the instructors to be available, using the West Course, to give rides at speed for those who want to see what it’s like. Cost is $50 for 3 laps (helmets provided), payable when you get into the car. Sessions will be available morning and afternoon on all 3 days. Instructor laps will run concurrently with the open track on the East Course.

PADDOCK GARAGES will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are a limited number of garages available; each will hold one car. They will be available Thursday afternoon. Garages will be reserved for all four days (no single days). Cost is $300 per garage.

JUDGED CONCOURS will be held on Saturday morning. Entry into the Concours Car Show is by pre-registration only, open to SAAC National members only. The entry fee is $50 per car and spaces are limited to 8 cars per class (due to the time it takes judges to evaluate each car). You cannot register for and enter the concours after you arrive. There will be concours classes for the following cars: Cobras (CSX2000 and CSX3000 cars only), Shelbys (all years), Bosses, Tigers and Competition Cars. There are 3 levels: Division I (stock/original cars); Division II (non-NOS cars); Division III (original/unrestored “Survivor”). All other cars qualify for either of the other two SAAC-32 car shows. The same car cannot be entered in more than one show. Concours entry is on a first-come/first-served basis. Judging guidelines will be sent to all entrants. All trophies will be engraved with the winners’ names and mailed after the convention.

HI-PERFORMANCE MOTORS is a display of Cobras, Shelbys and Boss Mustangs which are original or restored to appear as they could have been on a Shelby dealer’s lot when they were new. These cars do not have to be strictly original but must be period correct. Each entry will receive a participant’s award and all classes will be evaluated on Saturday morning by a team of judges based on workmanship and presentation. Cars will be judged against each other and not a standard of perfection. Special parking for these cars will be available all three days of the convention. There is no entry fee for participants.

SHINE ‘N SHOW display will take place on Saturday afternoon. All cars not in Concours or Hi-Performance Motors are eligible. Each entry will receive a participant’s award and all cars will be evaluated by a team of judges who will determine the winners in a dozen generic classes. Special Shine ‘N Show parking will be available all three days of the convention. There is no entry fee for participants.

PARTS SWAP SPACES will be assigned on a first-come/first served basis out at the track beginning at noon on Thursday. It will run through Sunday. There is no pre-registration for parts swap spaces. Once you set up there will be no need to move. The track will close each evening at 6:30 pm so once you set up, all you’ll have to do is secure your belongings before you leave. There will be a one-time swap meet space fee of $10 per frontage foot (spaces are approx. 20’ deep) — payable after you set up. This charge will cover the entire convention. Complete swap meet details will be mailed to anyone who checks the appropriate spot on the pre-registration form. All swap meet vendors and their staff must pay the daily registration fee in addition to the swap meet space fee.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EVENING PROGRAMS. These activities will be held at the headquarters hotel in Salt Lake City, the Little America Hotel. The hotel is about a half-hour’s drive from the track. Saturday evening’s program will be proceeded by a buffet dinner.

GOLF CARTS will be available: cost is $300 for all 4 days, payable in advance. They will be available on Thursday afternoon. The track’s insurance prohibits anything other than golf carts in the paddock: no mini-bikes, scooters, 3 or 4-wheel ATVs, bicycles, skate boards, roller blades, etc. Privately owned golf carts must carry liability insurance.

REFUND POLICY. Registration refunds (less a $20 service charge) will be made if we receive written, fax or e-mail notification of your cancellation prior to June 28th, 2007. Open track refunds: once all slots have been filled there will be no refunds. In the past we have attempted to issue refunds to those who signed up in advance and then, at the last minute, found that they would not be able to participate. In the meantime all slots had been filled and we had to turn people away. In some cases not being able to run meant those people either did not bring their cars or did not attend the event. When slots became available at the last minute due to these eleventh-hour cancellations, those people who had wanted to run were not in a position to do so. The whole situation strikes us as unfair, so we have adopted a strict open track refund policy. No refunds will be made once the event begins or after the event. Credit for future convention open track spots will be issued. Dinner ticket refunds will be made prior to June 28th when written notice of cancellation is received. Refunds cannot be made after that time as we will have confirmed the final number of meals with the caterer.
